- Panel Discussion with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
On September 8, Deborah Ball moderated a panel discussion at the U-M School of Education that featured U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. School of Education faculty members David K. Cohen, Bob Bain, Annemarie Palincsar, Peter Bahr, and Robert Sellers joined Ball and Secretary Duncan on the panel, along with Dedrick Martin, superintendent of Ypsilanti Public Schools, and Jordan Peshke, a current student in U-M's elementary teacher education program. Duncan promoted the impact education can have on boosting the economy as the panel discussed strategies to ensure excellence in U.S. classrooms. He also lauded the School of Education’s efforts – describing U-M’s teacher education program as a "model". Duncan’s visit to the U-M School of Education was part of his "Education and Economy" bus tour throughout the Midwest.
