In a November 25, 2009, article in Education Week, “Majoring in Math Not Always a Classroom Plus,” writer Sean Cavanagh highlights Deborah Ball's research on mathematical knowledge for teaching in his discussion of studies that call into question the often-assumed link between effective mathematics teaching and the credential of a math major. Cavanagh also draws on findings from last year's National Mathematics Advisory Panel report, which Ball contributed to as a Panel member, and the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) math test results in his discussion.
