- Michigan Daily: U-M School of Education Sponsors ACT Tutoring for Detroit Metro High Schoolers
A December 9 article in the Michigan Daily features Letters to Success, a campus student group that pairs U-M undergraduates with Detroit metro area high schoolers for a free eight-week ACT preparation course. The group's founder, U-M junior Ross Chanowski, worked with Deborah Ball and School of Education Assistant Dean Henry Meares to develop the program, which he had instituted during 2008-09, to provide field experience for students enrolled in ED118, Schooling in a Multicultural Society. During fall semester participating undergraduates worked with high school juniors at Willow Run High School. Letters to Success trains U-M undergraduates to pass on their own experience with college entrance exams to high schoolers who do not have access to the opportunities that most U-M students have had. Ball describes it as a "win-win" opportunity: undergraduates gain direct experience helping others learn while high school students gain access to college preparatory training. In the future, the program may become a required component of some School of Education courses.
