Here is a portrait of two figures lying on the earth representing both the Native American and Black races in America. They each hold in their hand crude minerals. Diego Rivera wanted this panel to convey the rich potential of America and the aspects that make manufacturing possible: both the races that make up the country and the materials necessary for the product. Rivera intended for these two people to look androgynous in order to implicate both men and women in the process of the making of America. Hence, he is not only including all races, but all sexes as well.(note: the black model was modeled after Diego Rivera’s maid from the Wardell Hotel from which he stayed during the production of the mural) 6
