"Tejiendo" - Zulia Gotay
"Tejiendo" was painted in the oil on wood media 3. There is a smoothness to the brush strokes and a fading of the colors
that gives the painting a very relaxed and calming impression. The only color that truly stands out in this painting is the blue in the
woman's skirt, but even then the image of a mother and her child seems to draw the eye away from the skirt and onto the faces of the
Chicana women.
"Tejiendo" was chosen for the Family Gallery because of its ability to express the nurturing that is expected of a good
mother. The painting illustrates how the care and tender force the mother exerts in the routine, but wonderful duty of brushing her
daughter's hair. The faces of the women show the reality of the bonding experience and the reality that stereo-types, the braided pig-
tails of Chicana girls, still exist.
