Castle Chammine Bleys and I rode to the Isle of Avalon, an amusing feat in itself, and took refuge at Castle Chammine, a naval fortress and one of the few structures on the Isle. Roger, Lord of Avalon, was glad to have me as his guest. He requested that I examine a disease that was troubling his sailors and also to divine for him on the topic of his love life. I agreed to speak prophecy for him, but could not guarantee that I'd have time to do much more than treat a few of his ill-stricken men. He seemed pleased to receive any measure of my guidance. Bleys and I were each shown to quarters and we were given the use of a magnificent vista room from which I would perform the task of taking guardianship of this shadow.

It was a simple task to peer at the visions of this man's future, free of cloudy interference as it was. He was to fall in love with a lady of partial royalty with whom he had already made aquaintance. The courtship would begin several months from now and would be troubled by personality conflicts between her and members of his family. I gave him a description of the woman, and told him to let things run their course. He knew which woman it was that I spoke of and was content not to rush things for now.

When I was finished I looked around the castle for Bleys, but before I could locate him I received a Trump call from Jessica. She wanted to know if I had a spell which could watch-dog the pattern for her and alert her to activity there. I told her that there were a few spells which might have some use to her, but they fell short of her expectations. Then I noted that any spell cast that close to a pattern might well fail anyhow. She thanked me for the information and cut the contact. Too bad Bleys hadn't been with me at the time. He would have surely had a spell that would do the trick. I found Bleys a short while later in the dinning hall flirting with four women at once. I smiled and watched him from the arch until he noticed me and excused himself.

We went up to the vista room and I gazed out over Avalon as Bleys told me to bring pattern to mind and make a mental picture of the place. I did. It was beautiful and clear. He told me to pan back and envision all of Avalon. I struggled to hold the same level of detail while adding more and more area. For a while it worked but as Bleys had me encompass larger spaces, envisioning isle after isle I soon had to let the detail slip a level. Bleys said this was normal and that I had clung to too high a level of detail for too long. I found this odd. Wasn't I making this world more real by grasping control of it? Maybe not. It was an issue of philosophy. It was a very long process. In two hours I had a mental picture of all the lands I had visited and the pattern was filling in the rest. Was it filling the unknown parts as they were, as I want them to be, or as they should be? The Roman empire was vast and difficult to grasp. Bleys told me that the boundaries of a shadow were something vague. While shadow dwellers could not travel from shadow to shadow they were sometimes able to extend their shadow's boundaries until the overlapped with other shadows. I would not want this so he had me solidify the boundaries of my shadow. I built a membrane around it to shelter and contain it. Would my membrane hold if Ygg failed? I felt that the answer was yes, but I couldn't be sure. The task was complete for now. I retired to my room to rest.

Soon afterwards I received a Trump call from Locke. I went to attempt to walk Eric's new Pattern, but it was no use.

I returned to Avalon and tried once again to contact Sand.
