Now that I've had time to reflect on our recent travels through shadow
I've come to the conclusion that there are many elements which are
truly foreign to me. I suspect that this is normal - to be expected
in infinite and sometimes chaotic shadows. I will probably encounter
much more that is totally unfamiliar than that which is comfortable
and predictable. I reacted poorly at first to Texas, and very
possibly I behaved in an unwise manner in Chicago too. The others
have not had as hard a time. These places were much like their
earths, but my world is different, and I must be more careful.
So far I have come up with these principles for dealing with the
oddities of shadow:
- Take note of mana levels, influence of Pattern and Logrus,
'Realness' of the shadow, and control by Amberites or Chaosites
- Recruit a local guide who can brief you on customs and behaviors,
as well as conduct business between you and others in the shadow.
- Find out what is of value and procure more than you will need of
the commodity.
- Establish a base of operations.
- See to your safety and the security of those around you.
- Do not waste your time learning local languages, skills only
useful in this unique shadow, or mastering technology not likely to be
encountered again (or even work elsewhere).
- Take notes of universal truths that appear to carry over from one
shadow to the next.
I will add to this list as I learn more about shadows.
