The Dark

of Abraxis

The sorcerer Abraxis wandered Europe during the 9th century. He traveled from village to village claiming to be the strongest man in town. His might, derived from an intervention during one of his many singings of an ethereal song of strength, always proved to outmatch that of local strong men.

One day Abraxis was met on the road by a black knight. He challenged the rider to a contest of strength, but the knight remained mute and chose to attempt to spear Abraxis instead. Abraxis proceeded to first kill the knight's horse and finally the knight himself. He took the knight's lance as a trophy. From that day forward it is said that Abraxis was never bested in combat. This is not quite true, but it is also unimportant. What is important was the fashion in which Abraxis used the lance. Instead of impaling his opponents from horseback he swung the 14 ft pole and beat his victims about the head and shoulders from a safe distance.

The Dark Lance of Abraxis is unbreakable, but otherwise mundane when used in a normal fashion. However, when used as a very long club it becomes a level 4 talisman of large weapons(unique) with accuracy -2 and power +12. The wielder must have at least an 8 strength to wield the lance in this manner. A check digit of 5 or 6 is necessary when identifying the artifact in order to understand this unusual power.
