Isabelle and the Dishes
...(He got up, and threw the dust-covered handkerchief into a corner
of the room:)
"A plain covered with dishes?
Long, short, square, round dishes,
dishes with moon-lips perspiring pearls,
dishes with snow-hearts
floating on giant mercury-dishes?"
(His footsteps became jerkier, his voice curter:)
"Constellations, clouds, domes, colonnades, mountains, rivers, seas of
dishes will form the architecture of this august, majestic, immutable
world!"
(He struck his cane against the ground impatiently:)
"Newborn dishes,
four-bearded old-man dishes,
dishes of gluttonous usufructuaries,
grasshoppers,
merry-go-rounds of roses,
dishes with the white gaze of red mice,
white dishes covered with black tears!"
(He extricated himself from his footmuff and dusted his slippers with
great flinging strokes of his handkerchief:)
"Spheres of dishes,
three-dimensional dishes,
navel-dishes,
primordial dishes!"
