Guide to the Studying the Atlantic Slave System



Use the questions below to guide your study. Try to use them as you read accounts of the slave system.    Try to form a picture of how the slavery impacted the people in the 15th and 19th centuries.    Don't accept one source of information. Remember to look for corroborating evidence.   Use the electronic conference (global@bw.beachwood.k12.oh.us) for discussions.

ASSESSMENT

Extended journal entries (6)
  • Support with facts and evidence (demonstrate you've studied many sources)
  • Explain your thinking (each should take about 30 - 40 minutes to write)
  • Neat and easy to read (typed is nice)
  • Title and date of entry
  • Addresses all elements in the question
  • Points on the entries vary. Total is 150 points.
  • Please copy the entry or leave room in your journal to tape it in later.

  1. Explain the origins and workings of the African slave trade.
    • Why, in the European mind, were Africans more " suitable" for slavery in the "new" world?
    • Explain the timing of this new type of slavery
    • Who was involved? When?
    • What is the geographic distribution of slaves to the "new world?"
    • How were slaves enslaved? Who did it?
    • What was middle passage? How did Africans respond to enslavement and middle passage?
    Assessment:   Journal entry (1): Make an extended journal entry that explains the origins and workings of the slave trade. Support your entry with facts ( you might type and paste into your journal). Use one side of the paper, please. (Due: Monday April 27) - 40 pts.
  2. Construct an account using documents to describe the effects of modern slavery and slave labor on:

    a. The peoples of Africa
    • Did it change customs and practices? How?
    • How did the demography change? What impact did it have?
    • What was lost? Was anything gained?
    Assessment:   Journal entry (2): Make an extended journal entry that explains the impact of the slave trade upon the peoples of Africa. Support your entry with facts(Due: Wednesday: April 29) 20 pts.


    b The peoples of the "new" World
    • Did it change customs and practices? How?
    • How did the demography change? What impact did it have?
    • What was lost? Was anything gained?

  3. Explain how the slave trade and slavery contributed to the growth of the idea of "race" and of "racism."
    Assessment: Class discussion
  4. Explain how the slave trade and slave labor impacted the world's economy.
    • What was exchanged?
    • Was slavery profitable? How so? For whom? Why?
    Assessment: Journal entry (5): Make an extended journal entry that explains the impact of the slave trade upon the world economy. Support your entry with facts(Due: Friday, May 1)25 pts.
  5. Explain the process of emancipation throughout the world using time lines and maps
    • Compare variety of methods of emancipation
    • Trace its development through time and across space
    • What factors influenced decisions to end forced labor?
    Assessment: Journal entry (6): Make an extended journal entry that explains the impact of the slave trade upon the world economy. Support your entry with facts(Due: Friday, May 1)25 pts.
