Verbobonc began as an elven settlement, a small but impressive river town filled with tall, thin towers, narrow walkways and delicate wood and ceramic statuary. The local elves lived harmoniously with gnomes from the Kron hills, and the two groups banded together to deal with threats from the north and east.
As civilized humans entered the flanaess, most elves receded into the woodlands. The humans that settled the region added to Verbobonc's importance as a trade city on the Velverdyva River. The remaining gnomes and the newly settled humans, mainly of Oeridian blood, worked together to build up the city and fortify it. During these times the slogan "Earth and Stone, Man and Gnome" gained prominence and is still carved above the city's north gate. Verbobonc was formally incorporated into Veluna in CY119. It served as Veluna's primary port and was the primary target of Keoland's aggression during The Short War. When the Keoish invaders were finally driven off by a combination of forces from Furyondy and Veluna, Verbobonc grew distant from it's masters in Veluna. It was during this time that the church of St. Cuthbert grew to prominance. The city and its environs witnessed many years of peace until evil surfaced in the nearby Kron Hills. There, the mysterious Temple of Elemental Evil was built, and many vile men and creatures flocked to the area. By CY568, it became clear that the villains had established an army, and the following year saw a great battle between this horde and the forces of Verbobonc, Veluna, and even Furyondy. The forces of Good, led by Prince Thrommel of furyondy, eventually won the battle and scattered the evil hordes at the Battle of Emridy Meadows. Powerful mages and clerics sealed the temple with arcane bindings, claiming to have trapped a powerful demon within the golden doors of the edifice. Five years later, the hero Prince Thrommel disappeared. It was theorized that he was abducted by agents of the Scarlet Brotherhood, the mysterious group of Suel zealots to the south and east. His grief-stricken betrothed, High Mistress of the Order Joline, has retreated from the public eye. No one knows for sure what happened to Thrommel, but he remains missing to this day. It is now CY579. Rumors of new stirrings to the south of Verbobonc have prompted Viscount Wilfric to send forth a missive seeking adventurers. The members at court scoff at the rumors, and dismiss Wilfric as paranoid. Nevertheless, adventurers have been seen in the city, and the townsfolk are talking. Just what is going on down south? Who are these adventurers? What will become of Verbobonc if the threat is real?
