Things to consider at the Toledo Aquarium:

1. Try to find at least one representative of each named category that we covered in class, for example, a dipnoan, an elasmobranch, an ostariophysan, an osteoglossomorph.

2. Note how fishes swim and how they hold their place in the water. Some fishes swim with the entire body, others with only the pectoral fins, for example. Some fishes cannot maintain their position in one place, but must keep swimming. Be sure to look at the lungfishes. Do you find any correlation between swimming behavior and phylogenetic placement?

3. There will be several kinds of electric fishes, and I will try to point them out to you.

4. Note any social or breeding behavior. We may see some fishes on nests, and we may see some orally-brooding cichlids.

5. Note any feeding behavior, such as algae scraping or "nibbling," filter feeding, etc. Note mouth morphology, how protrusible mouths are, etc.

6. Note any atmospheric air breathing.
