This scenario about the origin and spread of ostariophysan groups assumes that:

• The characiforms are ancestors of cypriniforms. The assumption is that higher taxa can evolve from other higher taxa.

• More recently evolved species are competitively superior to older species, and will eliminate the latter.

• All species will disperse until they hit a barrier, and an understanding of their current ranges will be enhanced by examining their vagility, or ability to disperse.
