The vicariance model explains a very common pattern shown by plants and animals as due to the breakup of Pangea and Gondwanaland. Note that these patterns can be dated in part by correlating speciation events with geological events. Our otophysan example fits the Gondwana breakup well, but is more complicated that can be explained entirely by it.
