Propulsion by body and/or caudal fin
- Anguilliform: purely undulatory, most of the body participates
- Subcarangiform: similar to anguilliform, but posterior of body is emphasized
- Carangiform: only posterior body flexes
- Thunniform: thrust generated only by high stiff caudal fin
- Ostraciform: body without flexure, propulsion from oscillation of caudal fin
