Subject: Turner-Nolen Family History
Some info that may be helpful to the effort to document the
Turner and Nolen families:
Serepta (or Serrepta Turner, daughter of Charles Turner and
Violet Hall, married Alexander Nolen; they had 7 children: Loula
Sedina (1881-1 Sept 1957), my grandmother on my father's side;
Addie Nolen, who married Moyer Huff (thier kides were Leonia,
Harold, Ephizony, Buster, and Minnie); Maude Nolen, who married
John Nolen; Dollie Nolen -27 Dec 1886-22 Mar 1976 (who married
William Arthur Martin and had many descendents who keep in close
contact with the Nolens); Cabble Nolen, who married Sallie Huff
(children are Artiss, Lewis, Maurice, Ed, Marie); Sylvatus Nolen,
and Floyd Nolen (who died as an infant).
Loula Sedina Nolen married Samuel Kemper Nolen (1875-11 May
1961), son of Issac Alexander Nolen and Judith Ann Turner. They
had 8 kids: Roy, Ivy Myrtle, Avis, Jewell, Leonard Earl, Cecil,
Alice Ava, and my Dad Marvin Valentine Nolen. Myrtle married
Burnice Greer (1904-1995) and has two great sons, Glynn Roy and
Robert Hoover Greer. Glynn Roy had two kids (Roy and
Pam). Bob has two kids (Brad and Suzzane)--his son Dwigth was
killed in the early 1980s in a Navy helo accident. Brad has two
children, Ashley Marie and Madison Alana. Uncle Earl has one
child (Gloriadene), married to James Prillman, and they have a
daughter Loretta, married to Tim Chisom. Uncle Cecil has one son
Randal, married to Nancy Agee. My Dad was the prolific one--5
kids: me, born 1954; Julian, born 1956; Layton, born 1957; Myra,
born 1961,and Ron, born 1969. I have two children, Eric Darrell,
born 4 Dec 1983 of my first marriage to Donna Guyette, and Carly
Alexandra, born 25 Dec 1996--from my 2nd marriage to Mary Garbon.
Layton has a son Bradley, age 3, and an adopted daughter Alison,
from his marriage to Katherine Vass.
To ANN TURNER NOLEN HUGHES
I was astounded to find and read your notes that Nyla routed to
me. I was thrilled to find out about you and what you are doing
in terms of researching the family history. You and I are 2nd
cousins or something close to that. I too am a descendent of
Francis Turner and related to Shadrack Turner. I am very
interested in the books you are writing. I know that my entire
family will also be interested too. You should come to the
annual Nolen family reunion in Roanoke this year. I always
called Judith Anne Turner "Grandma Judy" just like you. I still
remember her and have a picture taken on her 100th birthday at my
Uncle Jewll's house where she lived. Aunt Dovie is still alive
and living in the Collingsville area. I am going to try to visit
her this summer. I visited Grandma Judy's grave in Sept 1996
with my Dad and my brother Julian. I tramped thru the "Nolen
ancestral homeland" in the deep valley on the opposite side of
the road from the Nolen Cemetary (down on Sycamore Creek, near
its junction with the Smith River). When I was a kid, I
remember hearing my Dad talk about Uncle Charlie, Aunt Lil, Aunt
Sus, Unc Posie, and your grandad Ed, but I only knew my
great-uncle George Ross Nolen (we kids called him Uncle George,
although he was really my Dad's uncle). He lived with us when I
was young.
Let me trace my descent for you. My father is Marvin Valentine
Nolen (born 1925), yougest son of Samuel K. Nolen (1875-1957) and
Loula Sedina Nolen (1881-1957). Here it branches two ways in
terms of the Turner connection. Grandma Loula was the daughter
of Alexander Nolen (about whom I know absolutely nothing--perhpas
you can help) and Serapta Turner. She was the daughter of
Charles H. Turner (1818-1857) and Violet Hall. Charles H. Turner
was the son of Francis Turner, Jr. (1789-1880) and Nancy Thomas.
Francis was the son of Adam Turner and Mary Pilson. Adam was the
son of Revolutionary War vet Francis Turner, Sr. (c1740-1803),
who probably was a Scotch-Irish immigrant. His father and mother
were James? or John? and Mary Turner, I think. (Not real sure of
this part). I would like to trace this line back to Scotland.
Now, to go back to my Grandpa Sam Nolen. His parents were Issac
Alexander Nolen (1840-1923) and Judith Ann Turner (1857-1960).
They were our great-grandparents, yours and mine. Issac
Alexander Turner is descended from Charles P. Nolen (1806-1875),
supposedly the one who changed the spelling of our name from
Nowlin to Nolen. He in turn is descended from John Nolen or
Nowlin (1770-1855), which is as far back as I can go, so far.
Grandma Judy was descended from Jefferson Turner and Susan Short.
Susan Short's line can be traced to William Short (1613-1658) in
England and to an English baronet Sir William Skipwith, whose
daughter married William Short's great-grandson. There is also a
French Hugenot connection there. Now for the Shadrack Turner
connection--my great-great-great grandfather John Nowlin
(1770-1855) had a son Alexander (born in 1810) who married a Mary
Ann Turner, born in 1815, who was the daughter of Shadrack Turner
II (born 1788) and Judith Burnett). Shadrack II was the son of
John Turner (born 1747) and Elizabeth Price. John was the son of
Shadrack Turner (born about 1720) and Ann Pollard or Hill.
Shadrack is supposedly the son of John Turner, born in 1689 in
Cornwall, England. (I'm not sure of the early info, maybe you
can help.)
My daughter Carly Alexandra is named after my two great-
grandfathers on my Dad's side (Issac Alexander Nolen and
Alexander Nolen) and partly after Charles P. Nolen (my
great-great-grandfather and Charles H. Turner (my great-great
grandfather on my grandma Loula's side). My wife's father's name
is also Charles. We thought she might be a boy at first, so we
had picked the name Charles Alexander--when we found out she was
a girl we just feminized it to Carly Alexandra.
Once again, I was thrilled to see your note where you talked
about Grandma Judy--I am amazed that the computer has made it
possible for our branches of the family to get back in touch.
Please think about coming to the Nolen family reunion this
summer.

Please add me to your list of subscribers.
I am searching for information on the following and appreciate
any tidbits, scraps, pieces of information or even guesses
concerning them:
JOHN COLUMBUS TURNER, b. abt 1860-supposedly one of seven brother
that came over from England in the 1800s-married MANCIE Unknown
(could be Angeline or Guevall or both). He was in Pea Ridge,
Arkansas in 1882 when their first child, Benjamin, was born but,
I think, they moved to Hartman, Johnson Co., AR before 1904.
Who were his brothers? Where was he born? Who were his parents?
His children were:
BENJAMIN (b.1882 in Pea Ridge, Benton Co., Arkansas, m.(1) Anna
Adams, (2)Florida Garner Powell), WILLIAM(b abt. 1885), JOSEPHINE
(b. abt 1886, m. Hugh Lingar in Hartman, Johnson Co., AR),
GEORGE, ORA (m. Wm. Owens), RUTH (m. Unknown Gwinn), LOLA (m.
Ernest Walker).

these elusive Turners.
