Greetings to One and All,
We have a lot of new cuzins joining us this time. Also, we've
heard from some folks that haven't written to us in a while.
It's always nice to hear from new folks, but we treasure those
cuzins who pop in from time to time to share their research.
It's always exciting when someone is willing to share their
concerns about published information that doesn't seems to be
correct. I trust that this group would point out any obvious
errors that I might contribute. I think our Spirit of Family
helps us work together in our research efforts.

Nyla,
I am concerned with some seemingly misleading information that is
out there, even in the Mormon archives, and on the latest Family
Tree world wide pedigrees, that I believe to be probable
misinformation.
We have exchanged information before on the James Turner lineage,
and on the Shadrach line. My Jubal Turner was the youngest son
of Admire Turner. The information I believe is probably wrong
(no proof as yet) is the parents of Jubal's wife Milly Ross,
supposedly the John Ross and wife Nancy of Adair Co., KY. I now
believe (no proof as yet) that her parents are actually the John
Ross of Franklin Co., VA, who died in Bedford Co., VA, who was
the father of Sutherland Ross, and that she was probably a sister
of Sutherland. Sutherland is the person who was surety for Milly
when she married Jubal.
I have never been comfortable with the family in Adair Co., KY.
His children all (except Milly?) were born in NC. Possibly
there are two Milly Ross's, born a year apart?
This is the information I feel is possibly correct:
John Ross, b. ca 1770 Scotland, d. 1823, Bedford Co., VA., he
married ca 1790 Bedford Co., VA Relender Baswell. I have only
one child for him, and that is Sutherland Ross. He very probably
had others, possibly female children that were never listed.
Sutherland Ross, b. ca 1793 Franklin Co., VA, d. 9 May 1870,
Franklin Co., VA, married Docia Turner/Farmer, ca 1819, Children:
(1) Robert Venable Ross, b. ca 1820, Franklin Co., VA; (2) Emily
Ross, b. ca 1822, Franklin Co., VA, married 6 Nov 1837, Franklin
Co., VA, Ludwick Boon; (3) James H. Ross, b. ca 1824, Franklin
Co., VA.
I now believe it is possible that Milly (Mildred or Emily?) is a
sister to Sutherland Ross. Sutherland Ross was born the same
year 1793, as Jubal Turner, they knew each other, or knew of each
other. Milly was born 1797 (taken from her tombstone).
The Milly Ross listed as a daughter of John Ross of Adair Co.,
KY, was born 1796. In Salt Lake there are (or were in 1989) 2
group sheets showing the same parents, John and Nancy (?) Ross of
KY, for Milly, in one she is married to Jubal Turner, in the
other she is married to John Ross, and the marriage date was the
same as Jubal and Milly's marriage date. Milly who married Jubal
Turner is supposed to have been born in Virginia. All of the
John Ross of Adair Co., KY children are supposed to have been
born in NC, except for Milly? I have never been comfortable with
this information, and now believe it is wrong.
What I have, (not proved) so far, and am trying hard to connect
is:

To all on this list: I made a faux pax (sp) when I sent a note
re Penny's posting on the Joseph Brown Turner Collection, it was
exciting to see names that are the same as those in my northern
Turner line. I put the word not in my sentence and that really
was a zinger. I sent a note to Penny that I was not questioning
her source, I had not read what I typed. Nothing like eating
humble pie, but I would not question someone like that
intentionally. I had that happen to me and it hurt. I had
shared some family information on Prodigy and some family sheets
that were given to me without dates or sources and it was aired
on Prodigy Genealogy Board and I was not a happy camper! Before
I sent the information I had explained to this person that I did
not have sources and could not vouch for the data although it was
provided to me in good faith, and I in turn was trying to help.
Made me feel like a heel.... I lost a good friend because of it
from VT. So in no way would I question Penny, it was wonderful
of her to share it. So much for not reading stuff.

Hi. I have enjoyed reading the amazing amount of information
regarding the Burnett & Turner lines. I believe you and I share
several ancestors although my line is descended from Jeremiah,
Sr. > Roland > Elizabeth Burnett who married Silas R. Christal
(my g-grandparents). I originally had done a search for Burnetts
through Family Tree Maker On-Line (my genealogy program) and this
lead me to you and Chris Gaunt.
A distant Christal cousin recently sent me information on the
Burnett line as we share Jeremiah, Sr. also. His Burnett line is
from Jeremiah, Sr.> Jeremiah, Jr.> Samuel> Capt. Jeremiah> Mary
Ann Burnett. His Turner line is from Shadrack> William> John>
George Washington> Nancy Turner> Mary Ann Burnett. Mary Ann
Burnett married Silas Granville Christal, son of Silas
R. Christal. The Burnett ancestor chart was compiled by June
Bork who I see mentioned several times in your mailings. The
Turner information was by James D. Turner.
I hope there will be some Christal researchers joining too as
this family goes back to VA, TN, & MO also and intermarries
several times with the Burnetts. Silas R. & Elizabeth Burnett
Christal came to Denton Co., TX (Wise Co. before boundaries
changed) near town of Stony, 14 miles west of City of Denton
about 1853 from Macon Co. MO. Several other families of
Burnetts also came to TX and settled in nearby areas.
Both Elizabeth and Silas are buried in Eakins Cemetery, Ponder,
Denton Co., TX. They can be found on my cemetery webpage that
has several Christals and related families listed at

Nyla;
I am trying to help a Civil War researcher that is in possession
of some letters from the Civil War find long lost relatives. He
would dearly love to find out the fate of the family involved.
There is a hand written letter from James D. TURNER, who was a
chaplain in the 4th Penn Regt, to his wife Callie (Caroline
TURNER). He thinks the family had settled around Cannonsburgh,
PA at the time of James death around June 24, 1864. Apparently
he died during the war because the following children are listed
in his wife's pension file. Joseph B. TURNER, born July 30, 1853
Clara M. TURNER born December 4, 1855. Harry I or L TURNER born
February 26, 1858.
I would appreciate anyone's input in helping the gentleman,
please contact me.

Subject: Samuel Packwood Letter
Nyla,
This is the letter I mentioned that was written by Samuel
Packwood who was married to Elizabeth Turner who was a daughter
of Shadrack Turner Senior and Ann (Hill) Turner.
The Samuel Packwood Letter
Published in May 1911-by The Argus, Greenfield Ill.
"The following letter was written just one hundred years ago
today. The writer, Samuel Packwood, was the grandfather of
Daniel Smith, who was one of the well known characters of the
Waller neighborhood in years gone by. Two of Daniel Smith's
children are still living in that locality, they being
Sallie M. Smith and Robert A. Smith. The letter is one of the
family heirlooms and has been in the possession of Mrs. Sallie M.
Smith for many years. It was written from Town Creek in Henry
County, Virginia, the letter bearing no envelope, being folded
and sealed with red sealing wax. The address thereon was as
follows:
"To Mr. John Smith living in the state of Kentucky in
Cumberland County near the mouth of mud camp favoured by Mr.
gearhart."
The letter is in a fair state of preservation and is highly
prized by the family. We have followed the style of the writher
as to spelling, capitalization and puctuation. It is merely a
family letter, its age being of greatest interest to our
readers:"
"May 5, 1811"
"Loving son and Daughter these few lines comes to let you
noe that we are in our usual state of helth at present thanks to
god for his mercys hoping these few lines will find you and your
little children in the Same State of helth. I gladly Received
your letter by thomas Stone and I got your Sertificate and I
Sent it by thomas gearhart inclosed in the letter also I
sent you a Detale of your affares in this part of the world. I
sold your corn to your brother Charles Smith for thirty thre
Dollors and a half--one of your hogs I never got and a nother one
Died Soon after I sold them I Sold them for Sixteen Dollers and a
half. I paid Jacob prilaman thirteen pounds of Iron and five
shillings and six pence. I thrased out your Ry and theare
was nine bushe's and a half and I sold it for a half Daller a
bushel I got four of corn (bushels) -out of the crib and I got
Seventy bundles of fodder out of the house is all that I got.
Charles Smith Sold the land and the man come on the place Soon
your money will bee Ready by the first Day of September
Except Standle and that I will try to git in Iron. Thare
is nothing new worth a writting to you a monsgt us. Mother
turner is very Loe in helth but some what amended your father and
mother is well our old Neighbor prelaman Lost his Daughter
Elesabeth hellems. And as you hav Rented Land I think it the
best way for the first year, The people are a going
to the bend of the Tennesy. Thomas Reves have bought William
Sharps Land and Sharp is going there. I would come out and bring
your money but I am afraid to promis but I intend to Com an Se
you if the Lord Spares me my helth
So that I can before long Remember my Love to brother
Larkin and his family. you wrote to me to Send you your ax by
thomas gearhart I got your ax but no chance to send it--and now I
will give you a Small account of this part of the world--corn is
to be got at thirteen Shillings and Six pence
a barrel--Ry at three Shillings a bushel--bacon at Six pence per
pound and as for Stock it is selling verry Loe and Land Does not
Sell for the haff of the valy of the Labour that is don on it--So
I donte Expect to Ever Sell my Land in my time, my children is
scattered So that I never Expect to see them all again but I
would faign injoy the Sight of you if I could for I miss the
children So much I must conclude my Leter noing that you all are
in the hands of them that abel to pervide for both body and
Spirit. So remaining your Affectshinate father ang mother until
Death Samuel and Elasabeth Packwood to John and Rachel Smith and
Samuel and Daniel and Steven. Elisha Deseirs his Love to be
Remembered to you all. Nancy and Edith and Elasabeth Deseirs
their Love to be Remembered."
In the book Meshack Turner 111- His Wife - Sarah Robey
Tucker, the author, Lucille R. Maddox, who saw a copy of this
letter but chose not topublish it, does clarify the various names
mentioned in the letter. This letter was sent to his (Samuel
Packwoods) "daughter and son-inlaw, Rachel Packwood Smith and her
husband, John Smith, who had recently taken up leased land in
Cumberland County, Kentucky." He refers to "Jacob Prilaman a
neighbor and Thomas Stone. Relatives of both of these men
intermarried the decendants of Shadrack Turner Senior " He
speaks of his grandchildren, Nancy, Samuel, Daniel, and Steven
Smith.....of his wife Elizabeth...his mother-in-law, Mother
Turner (Ann) " and of his wife Elizabeth's brother Larkin Turner
who is then residing in Cumberland County, Kentucky near Samuel
Packwood's daughter Rachel and her husband John Smith.

Nyla: Are you the one that is telling everyone about our list?
The amount of new interest certainly has increased over the past
few days. I see you on Roots-L from time to time.
Eunice: I get a lot of mail on those surnames, I send them all
to you because the more we have on the list, the more info there
is to share. I know that I seldom post anything, but I save all
of the digests and now and then, I can pull one up and help
someone out.
Nyla: Can you believe the amount of information that the
"cuzins" have shared on our list?
Eunice: Isn't it something?!! I have gotten so much out of it,
added it into my data base and, of course it goes into the
computer at the Bassett Library, and I do printouts for the
Patrick County Historical Society. There was quite a stir when I
added the Goode files. Virginia said that she's made a lot of
copies for folks. Virgil is our Rep now, so the Goode family is
very popular.
Aren't YOU proud of the way your list has taken off? Just think
how much it has accomplished in bringing folks together. There
is a real sense of family there.

I had hoped that Janet Cox would come to VA to see me; but now
that I am on my way to San Diego, CA, I guess I won't make that
trip to SW VA to see whereour ancestors called home.
