                                        The Burnett Family Tree

Burnetts originally they were an Anglo-Saxon family, first heard of living
in
Arlesey, Bedfordshire before 1066. They moved up to the Scottish border
country along
with a number of Norman English families like the Bruces and Frasers during
the reign of
David 1. They settled amongst other places at Gordon, a village which gave
its name to
another great family who were shortly, like the Burnetts, to move to
north-east Scotland.
The first of the Deeside Burnards, or Burnetts as they were later
called, was Alexander, a follower of Robert the Bruce, who rewarded him with
an estate
at Banchory and the post of Royal Forester of Drum. Legend has it that he
received as his
badge of office 'The Horn of Leys' This beautifully carved ivory horn,
decorated with gilt
metal bands and semi-precious stones, still hangs in the castle.
For the next 250 years the Burnetts lived on the small artificial island
fort or
crannog on the Loch of Leys, the fortunes of the family rose slowly. Robert
was a deputy
sheriff of Kincardine and is believed to have fought for the king against the
island rebels in
the bloody battle of Harlaw just twenty miles to the north. His son Alexander
was
rewarded with Banchory as a free barony for fighting for the unpopular James
111, who
was defeated and murdered by rebels only three months later. But it was one
of
Alexander's younger sons, Canon Burnett of St. Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen,
who
established the important church connection which was to loft the Burnetts to
a new level
of wealth and prosperity. The unfortunate Canon was beaten to death in his
own cathedral
during the early period of violence against the Catholic Church, but he
established an
important relationship between the wealthy Abbey of Arbroath.
One of his more worldly colleagues, Canon Hamilton, had despite his priestly
vows
produced a daughter for whom he was anxious to provide. In 1543 a marriage
was
arranged between the canon's daughter, Janet Hamilton, and Alexander Burnett
of Leys,
and as her dowry she brought a substantial area of church land. The Burnetts
suddenly
found themselves a much wealthier family. Five years after the death of
Beaton, Alexander
and Janet Burnett, already with six children, decided they needed and could
afford a better
home than the water-logged island of Leys.
Crathes Castle took forty years to build; there must have been many delays
for this
was the time of troubles during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. Alexander
had to fight
in her army under the Earl of Moray at the battle of Corrichie in 1562, just
a couple of
miles to the north on the Hill of Fare.
St. Nicholas Parish Church is the closest church to Crathes Castle and was
the
church most visited by the Burnetts of Leys. Some of the following dates and
names were
taken from the St. Nicholas Parish Church records.
Robert Burnett was christened at St. Nicholas Parish Church in 1516. He
married
his first cousin Sara Johnston. The Burnett Clan and the Johnson Clan where
allies and
often married into one another. Robert and Sara had children one son John,
our ancestor.
John Burnett was christened at St. Nicholas Parish Church in 1548. He
married is
cousin Isabel Johnston in 1574. Isabel was the daughter of William Johnston
and was
christened at St. Nicholas Parish Church in 1549. John and Isabel had five
children
Thomas, John, William died at age one, William and Elspeth all christened at
St. Nicholas
Parish Church. John died in 1612 and Isabel died in 1620 she was buried
beside John in
Aberdeen Scotland.
Thomas Burnett was christened at St. Nicholas Parish Church in 1574. He
married
his first cousin Margaret Johnston in 1608. Margaret was the daughter of John
Johnston
and was christened at St. Nicholas Parish Church in 1584. Thomas and Margaret
had nine
children Isabel, John, Christain, Robert, Elizabeth, Margaret, Thomas,
Alexander, and
William all christened at St. Nicholas Parish Church. John died in 1661 and
Margaret died
1672.
John Burnett was christened at St. Nicholas Parish Church in 1610. He
married his
cousin Lucretia Johnston in 1657. Lucretia was the daughter of Andrew
Johnston and was
christened at St., Nicholas Parish Church in 1629. At age 24 John and his
wife Lucretia
boarded the Ship Abraham of London, Mr. John Baker, Master, bound for Virgin.

all born on the Burnett Plantation. John died 1686 leaving the Burnett
Plantation and
family business to his beloved wife Lucretia, John II and Thomas. Lucretia
died 1709 and
was buried beside John in the Burnett Plantation Cemetery.

Thomas
continued the family business of Merchants with ships, trading in the import

their masters.
When the indenture time was over, the masters gave them new clothes, some
corn and
whatever else was agreed upon. The family business was successful and in
1680^s there
were several references to our Burnetts, in dealing with Scotland. John II

Gatewood in 1708. Amey was the daughter of John Gatewood and was born 1680 in

And his brother William Witt b1776 had a son named William "Turner"
Witt. William Witt married Lucinda Reeves, daughter of George Reeves,
in Patrick CoVA in 1799. William Witt & Lucy Reeves moved to
Franklin CoTN
Does anybody know of connection that would trigger given names
of "Foster" and "Turner" in descendants of John Witt b ca 1750 in
what is now Henry CoVA? The conjecture is that he married a FOSTER
as 1st wife and then Dicey Holland in 1783 ans 2nd wife.
Appreciate any clues to possible Turner-Foster-Witt connection

Subj:	Turner files

Nyla, you had previously asked what counties I was loading onto the History
file of
Turner's. The counties are as follows: Caroline, Charles City, Culpeper,
Essex, Fairfax,
Goochland, Halifax, Henrico, Isle of Wight, King George, King & Queen,
Orange, Prince
Georges, Southampton, Spotsylvania and Westmoreland. Chris will have the
file loaded
soon.

Now as to a personal Inquiry. My Turner's are desended from James Turner who
Married
Kerrenhappach Norman. Kerrenhappach means horn of Beauty. I had originally
thought
it was probably an Indian name, but have subsequently found out that it is
from the book
of JOBE. What I am trying to find out is who were her sons. I know that one
of them
was named James Jr. I am reasonably sure that this is the same James that
was governor
of N.C. Kerrenhappach was a modern day Clara Barton of the Revolutionary
War. A
monument was erected to her at Gilfords Courthouse. The DAR records do not
identify
her other sons. I am trying to find out who they are. I Have Written N.C.
Archives
concerning this, but without success. Your help would be appreciated. By
the way James
Sr was originally from Halifax Co. Va.
