=== POSSIBILITIES & PROBABILITIES === The European origin of our emigrant
ancestor, as well as the family itself, has
not been and may never be ascertained. Until his ancestral origin becomes
more definite, however, we must continue to explore all
possibilities which seem reasonable. No consistency in the spelling of the
surname has been found, on either side of the Atlantic.
even in MD the variations recorded closely approach the possible. It is said
that., in the early colonial period, there were as many
ways to spell any name as there were clerks. Without any assumption among a
number of European families having similar
surnames, we should explore possible connections with any one of them. In
France, Belgium, Italy or Spain. Rietstap, in his
"Amorial General", finds a family named "Perregaux" in Nuefchatel (N.
France), one with Spelling "Perignon" in Lorraine, which
acquired an acute accent on the "e"in Languedoc, as "Perignon" in N. Italy.
he found it "Perego" in Milan and "Perega" in Padua.
In south central France it may be a place name, relating to the city of
Perigueaux, former capital of the old Province of Perigord.
The Count's of Perigord & Tallyrand- Perigord's are another story.
More is detailed on this topic in John Paul Grady's, 1962 outline, from
which the above paragraph is taken. This manuscript has
never been published. I have observed in my gathering of information several
later researchers have also arrived at the same
conclusions as Mr. Grady and the people that collaborated with him. There is
also a lot of myth and family traditions being passed
around. Without any intention of offending anyone, for any purposes, this is
as far back as one can go with our Peregoy ancestor
at this point in time. Information at a later date may break this barrier,
but right now there is nothing conclusive. <TO'C>.
=== DISCUSSION === (Several of the related families' lines back into the
early Perigord lines, But there is no connection at this
time with our Peregoy's and these people. Evelyn Pedigo Crouse od Marion,
Va. in her book "Years of Work" (1996) gives a
very good outine of this tale in her preface. Evelyn states she has only
included this data "for those that feel they should be treated
like royalty", which sums it up very nicely.
=== OCTOBER 1995 NOTE === William Bruce Pedigo (1939-1995). With the
sudden loss of Bruce Pedigo, a dedicated
researcher of the Pedigo descendants, all I have to comment is he will missed
but not forgotten. A major part of this work is a direct
result of his efforts. Through the kindness of his mother Mary Lois Kenedy
Pedigo, his papers and correspondence from the last 20
years have been combined into this data base. <TO'C>.
Sarah: We know Sarah's father was an Edward Mumford. If this is the correct
Edward is not proven. I have not found any link to
Mary Watkins. Need more imput here. === NOTE === The exact marriage date of
Joseph and Sarah is not known, nor are the
exact years of their childrens births. Different researchers come up with
other years for same, but they are all in the same general
time frame. This is the start of the Peregoy/Pedigo family as we know it
today in America. We need a good preamble here.
Lacking one at the moment. I will quote John Paul Grady, 29 Oct. 1962. "The
manuscript Peregoy - Perrigo - Pedigo is NOT
intended to be a genealogy, but only a condensed outline, which we are
continually amending as we uncover additional data and
new evidence"
We here now in 1992 in an attempt to find a few specific individuals, have
come to the conclusion we would never find them
unless we tried to trace everyone that was possibly related to them.

Co, MD.22 == NOTE == With the desc. of Joseph start the conflict that has
resulted from spelling of the surname. There is no
rhyme or reason to the patterns of the spelling. The major mixup is with the
New England Perrigo-Perigo families that migrated
South and West. Many researchers continue the use of the Peregoy version and
they are not incorrect as the pronunciation is the
same. But being the spelling has been used in official documents as well as
by the individuals I believe it is more fitting to continue
the spelling variations <TO'C>.

JOSEPH PEREGOY
Probably son of Henry and Amy (Green) Peregoy
This Joseph, d. intestate, before 27 march 1792, when Administrator was
granted to his eldest son, Joseph Jr. (2 Admins. 221)
He left 10 children by children by first wife ________ _______, and a
daughter Amy, by a second wife, Susanna (Green)
PEREGOY, whom he had married 13 October 1786. She survived him and received
her third of the estate (Dower), plus one
portion as Guardian of daughter, Amy. (Appointed 8 April 1794, recorded in
proceedings, 86).
Now this Joseph may have married (1) Elizabeth _______, who was named in
the acknowledgment to a Grantor Deed, as wife
of Joseph, when she surrendered her "Dower Rights' in a tract of land called
"Talbott's Purchase", part of "Long Crandon", on 25
August 1759 (Liber B, No. G, folio 517, Baltimore Co. Land records), This
tract lying on South side of Gunpowder Falls, was the
same land formerly conveyed to Thomas Franklin to the said Joseph Peregoy.
But that Franklin--Peregoy conveyance was made in
1732. (Liber IS, No. L, folio 239 Baltimore Deeds)
We still need more evidence here, to discover "who was whose". But for
now, we will deal with the Joseph who'd died intestate
in 1792. By that time several of his children were married, in 1790 Census
his household included 3 males over 16 (self included),
5 males under 16 and 2 females (wife included).
Joseph and Henry Peregoy Jr., were listed together in Baltimore Co. debt
books, 1754-1771. Henry lived 10 years after the
death of Joseph in 1792. Henry signed documents only with his mark "H",
differing here from his brother. Joseph may have been
an older son of Henry Sr. and may not have been impeded in his education by a
cruel step-mother. He could sign his own name. In
any event, Joseph's 3 older sons: Joseph Jr., William and Elisha, took the
oath of Allegiance to Maryland in 1778, from Middle
River Upper Hundred . (Minute Book of Court August 1778, p 320). On 15
October 1787, just a year after his second marriage to
"Susanna Green" Joseph signed Three Grantor Deeds, 2 of them to his son,
Elisha, XXXXXXX conveying title to tracts "Cold
Friday" (44 Acres) and a leasehold on "Eleanor's Lookout" (48 acres). The
third went to son, William, covering a tract called
"Union" (160 acres). All of these deeds were witnessed by Leonard and
Mayberry Helm Jr. and acknowledged the same date,
before Justices for Baltimore Co., John Moale and George Gould Presbury,
without any interrogation of his newly acquired wife,
as to her Dower Rights, if she had any, in these conveyances to his own
children.

Probably m 27 April 1785 to Mary Gorsuch, possibly daughter or
sister of Robert Gorsuch, She may have died soon. 1790 Census
shows
Joseph's household as all Males; he and another over 16, with 5
males
under 16. This Joseph was mentioned in an 1812 letter as living in
Baltimore.
II. William who may have died interstate in 1820. if so,
his
estate was administered by sons, Joseph and Nathan W. named
Executors. Household of William ib 1790 census tallied self with
2 males under 16, 6 females (including wife0 and 1 slave.
III. Elisha, Prob. m. 14 June 1786 to Welthy Hall.
1790 Census shows self, with 4 females in household.
IV. Elizabeth b. abt 1789 (81 in 1850 Census of Penn Twnshp.
Morgan co., Ohio, in household of Jacob Jones, than 22 (probably
son or grandson) She m. 7 June 1786 to Jacob Jones, not given in
1850 Ohio Census, but in an adjacent household were found one
Thomas Jones (63 in 1850) with wife Mary, than 61 both born in
Maryland. With them lived one William Peregoy (59 in 1850) b. 1791
in Maryland) There was also a Stephan Jones (53 in 1850 with wife
Mary, same age, both born in Maryland, with younger members of the
Jones family in this Ohio Township.
In 1790 Census of Baltimore Co. Maryland, household of Jacob Jones
tallied self with 2 males under 16, 3 females (including wife) and
8 slaves. They moved to Jefferson Co., Ohio about 1809, with
Several other members of this family group.
V. Rebecca, m. 14 January 1795 to Samuel Naylor, son of
John Naylor Sr. This entire family moved to Jefferson Co., Ohio in
1809. Living first in Warren, than in Smithfield Township.
