the same father but is is uncertian if they
shared the same mother. We need the exact birth date for Sarah. Also any
information on 1st wife who is unknown would help.
<TO'C> Sarah and John were married by Orthneil Minter. She is listed on
the 1850/60/70/80 census with rigt husband and
children age 37/32/64/65. Information to me 17 July 1989 from Ida Conrad
Peabody and from the book "The story of the Hardy
Family" By Barbara L. Hardy of Decatur, Georgia in 1984.
The Census of 1830 from Henry County shows John & Sarah in their own
home with a small daughter. John did his best to
make a living for his family. in the early years he was occasionally in debt
and was obliged to pledge his horse and household
furnishings until he could make enough to clear his record. The census of
1840 found John & Sarah and their growing family in
Franklin Co, Va. There were 4 children two boys and two girls.
in 1850 they had returned to Henry County and the two oldest children
had married. Six more brothers and sisters were still at
home with John and Sarah. It is quite probable the family lived on Snow
Creek, near Danville, Va. During the years in Franklin
County as their older children married into families living in that region.
the oldest child, a daughter named Martha Jan married in
1846, Andrew Wilson Tench, a Tobacconist.
In 1850, eldest son Elijah Pedigo married Clarissa (Classie) Stultz, the
daughter of Joe and Lucy Eddleston Stultz of Henry
County. Clarissa's great-grandfather, Adam Stultz, came to Henry County from
Germany by way of Penn. In the wave of "Penn,
Dutch" that moved into the southern colonies in the 1700's.
Green R. Tench was the father of Andrew Wilson Tench, Husband of Martha
Jane Hardy, and of Mary Jane Tench, who
married Joseph F. Hardy in 1856. Green Tench had a large tobacco plantation
in Franklin Co., Va. He sold his tobacco under the
name "G.T. Tobacco". He had made 18 trips into Georgia to sell his tobacco
before deciding to move his family to Habersham
County and re-establish his business there. The exact date is not known, but
seems to be sometime in the year 1859.
There were three families in the wagon train: the families of Green
Tench, John Hardy and a family named Purdy. The trip
was hard as the roads of the period were rough and most rivers had to be
crossed at fords which occasionally were in flood and
which covered the floorboards of the wagons. Two items belonging to John and
Sarah still exist - a spinning wheel and a fiddle,
now the cherished possessions of the descendents of James Owen Hardy.
John: Most likley the son of either Joseph or Charles Hardy. The copy of the
marraige bond between Sarah S. Pedigo and John
Hardy, on the same bond shows Elizabeth Pedigo who married John Dawson. Carl
A. Hannah has a copy of the bond.

Barbara L. Hardy of Decatur, GA, 1984 has written a book 143 pages
illustrated, genealogy, Tables, maps, ports. "The Story of
John and Sarah Pedigo Hardy of Henry County, Virginia and Habersham Countu,
Georgia": Their family and descendants.
Includes information on the Ivie, Pedigo, Ritch, Rylee, Strickland and
VanHorn families.
