In 1776, this part of the county became Henry County and in 1791 when Henry County split, his home ended up in Patrick County, Virginia. Archelaus Hughes was appointed a Captain in the militia on September 27, 1775. He later became a Colonel during the Revolutionary War. 27. Mary DALTON-376 was born 1754. Jesse married Nancy HANCOCK -380 on 21 Feb 1780 in Fluvanna County, VA. Jesse served a short term as a Private in the Revolutionary War from Albemarle County, Virginia. This is the position his widow applied for a pension with. Other contemporary family members remember him as an Ensign under Capt. Matthew Small and William Morrison claims to have served under Jesse while Jesse was a Captain and later a Major. Armajor Hancock in 1849 wrote of being mustered under Jesse in Patrick County, VA after the war. He recalls Jesse being a Captain and later being promoted to Major. Jesse's brother Peter says they both enlisted 8 February 1776 in the 7th Virginia Regiment under Capt. Matthew DeWitt. Jesse became lame and had a leg removed. He used a wooden leg afterwards. He died before 1 May 1722 in Henrico Co., (later Powhatan), VA. Bartholomew married Ann BURTON -372 on 1693 in Henrico Shire, VA. Bartholomew signed indenture documents July 7, 1684 to serve John Bright, Merchant of London for four years after arrival in the colonies. He boarded the ship Booth with Peter Pagan as ship's master. Bartholomew and Ann were married at St. John's Church near the town of Curles, Virginia. The church is gone but some items and records remain at the new church on East Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia. The couple settled on 318 acres of land next to Deep Creek and the James River in what is now Powhatan County, Virginia. The land is now owned by the Catholic Church and is the former site of St. Emma's Academy. 97. Ann BURTON-372 was born about 1670 in old Cobb's Hall, Henrico Co., (now Chesterfield), VA. He died Mar 1668 in Rappahannock Co., (later Essex), VA. John married Lucretia "Lues" JOHNSON-1492 on 1657. Jonne was a Cavalier known as the Merchant of Aberdeen. He was commissioned by King Charles I of England and given a warrant or charter from the king in 1638 to be sole supplier of Virginia importing tobacco to England on the ships return trip. Jonne and his wife came to Virginia in 1635 aboard the ship Abraham out of London. Ship master was John Barker. 161. Widow Joan asked the Friend's congregation to help find her son a job on May 7, 1675 according to church records. Joan's mother, Millicent Tickner, filed a claim on a cottage and garden after the death of her husband, Bartholomew. The lord of the manor of Albury granted her copy hold tenure of the property to be passed to her heirs after her death. She died soon after getting the property and it was turned over to Joan and George. Due to financial difficulties, they were unable to pay a "fine" or fee for permission to enter upon the land, and it was turned back over to the lord of the manor. George was also fined for failing to attend the lord's manor court, a standard duty for one who was a copyright tenant (Oct. 7, 1657, Apr. 19, 1659, Apr. 29, 1661 and Oct. 19. 1663). 194.
