Tony,
The TURNER I listed in Dekalb Co. TN is not in my line of TURNERs
but comes from the James TURNER line from Bedford Co., VA. Perhaps
others can fill in more of his descendants as I have nothing beyond him
and his wife. He is number 6 below.

I have many TURNERs in my line listed in TN; but, of the ones I have a
county for most are in Macon Co., Tn. Hope this is of some help.

Subj:	Rev. James Turner, Presbyterian Minister

From:	VFTurner2
To:	NCreed1

On 97-09-30, Eunice B. Kirkman referred to "Old James" Turner and his
grandson, James, who was a famous Presbyterian minister. There is a great
deal written about him in the book, "Leftwich-Turner Families and Their
Connections"

Rev. James Turner, the oldest son of Richard Turner and Nancy Johns, was born
May 7, 1759. He married Sally Leftwich, daughter of Col. William Leftwich,
Aug. 25, 1779. The death notice from Rev. James Turner's Bible states: "Died
in his own house Tuesday evening, January 8, 1828, about 9 oclock, the Rev.
James Turner in his 69th year, and for many years officiated with the Rev.
James Mitchell as Pastor to the Peak's Congregation."

A long biographical sketch, by Rev. William D. Foote, D.D., taken from
"Sketches of Virginia, Historical and Biographical", which was published
in 1885., is reprinted in the book. Children of James TURNER and Sally
LEFTWICH are:
     1. Mary TURNER, b: Aug 25, 1779; d. Jan 10, 1848; m: John HOPKINS, Sep
2,
1800.
      2. Elizabeth TURNER, b. Jul 10,1781; d. Jul 11, 1810; m. Price HOPKINS,
Oct 13, 1801.
      3. Rev. William Leftwich TURNER, b. Fec 11, 1782; d. Oct 18, 1813; m.
Nancy
ALEXANDER. He was also a Presbyterian Minister.
      4. Jesse TURNER, b. Jan 11, 1785; d. Jan 15, 1785
      5. James TURNER, b. Jan 15, 1786; d. Sep, 1786
      6. Jesse Hopkins TURNER, b. Jan 1, 1788; d. Mar 11, 1863
      7. Nancy Johns TURNER, b. Nov 22, 1789; d. May 30, 1790
      8. Nancy Johns TURNER, b. Jan. 8, 1792; d. Apr. 22, 1850; m. Rev.
Robert HALL of Ohio
      9. Dr. James Gardiner TURNER, b. Mar 8, 1794; d. Jan 14, 1869, m.
Elizabeth P. KEY, Jun 18, 1825. He was practicing physician at Rocky Mount,
Virginia before
removing to Texas.
     10. John Calvin TURNER, b. May 11, 1797; d. Oct 7, 1808
     11. a son, name not known, b. Dec 10.1798; d. Dec 30, 1798
     12. Melancthon TURNER, b. Dec 22, 1799; d. Aug 26, 1817 or 1819
     13. Sally Leftwich TURNER, b. Dec 29, 1801, d. Mar. 22, 1828
     14. Mildred Otey TURNER, b. Nov. 22, 1804; d. Jul 20, 1889; m. Thomas
Lumpkin LEFTWICH, (a cousin) Dec 22. 1829.

There were number of the descendents of Rev. James TURNER, who became
Ministers in the Presbyterian Church. If anyone is interested in further
reading about this family, the above named book is available on microfilm, and
can be ordered through a local LDS FHC, among other places. I found it at the
Sutro Library, a State of California facility in San Francisco.

The information I have is that Rev. William Henry Foote, published "Sketches
of Virginia, Historical and Biographical" in 1885. There must have been a
number of them, because the reference for the Rev. James Turner article is
Chapter XIV, Second Series.

In the post that propted me to write this piece, mentioned that one of the
Gilley letters stated:

"Foote in his 1854 volume, which I saw in the St.Louis City Library . . . "

This would indicate to me that Foote was publishing something over at least a
30 year period. I don't know if had the same title.

I don't know if this is a help, but that is all I know.

In post #233 you listed descendants of Edmond Lilly. Under the 4th generation

As I read Sharon's comments on home made "whisky" it reminded me of attending
the Allied Families gatherings with my grandmother in the 60's. She would sit
there naming people going by and what they did ...several whom she called
moonshiners (and they truely looked the role to a kid). Later on, as an
architect I used to keep a glass bottle of the clear stuff at my drawing
board. It was the best drawing pen cleaner I ever found. Even beats the
modern ultrasonic cleaners. ...Got to make you wonder what that stuff does
to people's insides if it eats dried ink that fast.

Dear Nyla,

Just got caught up on reading the comps, and wanted to submit info for the
survey you and David are doing. I am <age snipped> years old, and a
<occupation snipped>. I am <genealogy status snipped> who began my research
almost 20 years ago, on my father's side of the family in Patrick County, VA,
listening to my grandmother talk about the people and relatives in Patrick. I
have made many trips to Patrick Co, and fell in love with the area and the
people there!! Unfortunately, my husband and one daughter are not interested
in genealogy, I "burned them out" going over "hill and dale" looking for old
family cemeteries!!

Thanks for all the work you are doing to help preserve the heritage of our

Dear Nyla,

I am not a subscriber, but I frequently "tune in" to review the
compilations on the Turner/Ross/Via families. I truly appreciate all the
information that is included in these comps, and the amount of work
involved!!

I am a Turner descendant of William Green Turner-6715(David's number) and
his wife, Mary Jane Vaughan-6978. I hope someone can help me with the
following question. According to Comp 202A-Revised, the parents of
William Green Turner are listed as William Turner-912 and Elizabeth
Philpott-927. I have been researching my Turner line for 19 Years now,
and I have never been able to find documentation and/or proof of my
William Green Turner's parents. I had been told that one source of
documentation was a letter he wrote home to his mother during the Civil
War. However, if Elizabeth Philpott died 11 Dec 1837, then William would
not have been writing home to her!!

Would you please post this inquiry? My Turner line has really "stumped" me!!
Thank you in advance.

Dear Nyla,

I enjoy the compilations very much. Sometimes I have difficulty keeping
up with them. Like this time, I was away for 8 days and just got to
read Comps 234 thru 241, all at once. Nice to read all of the comments
of the other researchers.

I work on Patrick Co VA families and some nearby counties. Most of my
work is from printed works, and copies of public records some of which I
make myself and some graciously sent by others. Always willing to share.

Interested mainly in my husband's ancestors: Clifton, Martin, Rakes,
Cockram, Boyd, Ingram, Hancock, Edwards, Vipperman, Williams, Turner,
Wood Williams and many others.

Am looking for my maternal ancestors of Henry Jefferson b c1808 and wife
Minerva Ann b 1810. Lived and died in Alexandria VA.

Many thanks to you and to all of the others who share such good
information.

Hi Nyla,

Once again, thanks for all the work you put into this. Somehow I did not
get several messages which included your survey request--compilations #35
and 36. I downloaded them from Chris's web page.

I got into genealogy two years ago. My parents own a trailer on a gorgeous
part of Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke. Over Labor Day, 1995, we got
stuck inside because it rained all weekend during our vacation there. My
mother has been looking into the genealogy of our family since the early
80's, when she implored my help since I then lived on Capitol Hill in DC
and could easily get to the archives. It just sounded all so boring! It
wasn't until I had nothing else to do that I picked up her research to look
through it. I couldn't put it down and have been actively at it since that
time. My goal is to 1) find out where Shadrach came from and who his
parents were and 2) to develop a database of all his descendents. My father
grew up on a farm next to where we believe Shadrach lived. His cousins
lived there and he often visited there as a child. It is bringing together
my love of analysis, history and family.

<snipped poll info>

Look forward to hearing all the responses.
