Tazewell enlisted with the Confederate States of America along with his
brothers. He was a Private with Company H, 51st. Virginia Infantry
during the War of Northern Aggression. He was taken prisoner by the
Union at Waynesboro, Virginia 3/2/1865. He was sent to Harpers Ferry,
Winchester and Ft. Delaware POW Camp 3/12-1865. He was released
there 6/21/1865. Military records list him as dark complexion, dark hair,
blue eyes and height 5'-8".
Tazewell married (1) Mary Jane CARTER-3191. Mary was b. 1832.

rank of Private to Captain on February 11, 1864 and was discharged
August 1, 1865. He was wounded in action at the battle of Cross Keys
June 8, 1862. William and his wife alternated in the position of
Postmaster at Mattville for 34 years. He held many other local positions
including school commissioner and school trustee, U.S. Internal Revenue
Assessor and Distillery Surveyor and was a local preacher. William
