Hello
This is the first time that I have posted to this list and if I make mistakes
please forgive me. In doing my research on my family, one day I dug through
my cousins storage shed and came upon a bible dated in the 1800's. It does
not belong to anyone in our family and I would like to get it to its proper
home.

There is a marriage license between Henry f. Elsman who was born in Berlin
Germany 21 Jan 1842 and Anna Ernestine Koch born St Louis Missouri 25 Nov 1854
and died 15 Dec 1925. Other names in the Bible are Ida Elsman born 2 Mar
1882, Melvin Mitchell Turner born 16 Dec 1912 Spokane WA, James Oliver Turner
born 7 Feb 1876 Magnolia Kentucky and he married Ida Elsman 24 Feb 1912 in
Spokane WA.

Also with the Bible is a letter from Montana Historical Society stating that
the Bible is authentic and there are some family history papers with it.

I would like to find its proper family and return it to them. If anyone can
help me find the proper home for this treasure please write to me at
BGetchell@aol.com.
Sorry for being long winded.

Barbara Getchell

Comp. 249 lists #33 Chesley Aaron Rakes and Sarah DeHart's daughter #69
Polly Malinda Rakes as Married three times. lst to Barnard Fain. This is
incorrect. Her third marriage was to Barnard Fain 4 Apr 1886 in Patrick
County, Va. The dates listed for the other marriages would establish this
as well as her name being that of her second husband when she married
Barnard Fain.

Nyla;
I'm getting ready to make a move from Austin, Texas to Dublin, Virginia and
need to be taken off of the list for a while. I'm still looking for my
elusive TURNER bunch. The name WOOD was always used as a middle name and
was said to have been an old family name, though I have yet to make the
connection. My info follows with one last attempt .... Tami in Texas

JOHN WOOD of Lunenburg Co, VA and Williamson Co, TN
************************************************************************
JOHN WOOD, son of Stephen Wood and Ann Johnson was probably the firstborn
since he is the first child named in his father's will in 1782. He was listed
as a tithe under his father's name in 1769 tax list in Lunenburg Co, VA and
therefore must have been at least 16 and thus born by 1752 (his sister, Sally,
was born in 1753). The records show that John was married to Susanna________.
In 1780 John and Susanna deeded land in Lunenburg to John Hankins; in 1781 to
Jesse Crenshaw; in 1796 to John's brother Johnson Wood; and in 1802 to George
Wood (probably son of John's brother, David).

Sometime between 1802 and 1804, John moved to Willamson Co, TN and first
appears in the 1804 tax list. A John Wood, possibly the same, received a pass
from the Indian Agent at Southwest Point (now Kingston, TN) sometime between
July 29, 1801 and Oct 28, 1804. These passes were issued to travelers
desiring to go through, settle in, or trade in the Cherokee Country. (See
"Cherokee Agency Pass Book 1801-1804", reported in "Ansearchin' News (54-1959,
Vol 1-6, pg 121). John's sister, Sally and her husband William Jordan, had
earlier moved to Williamson Co by 1800 (tax list) and his brother, Johnson
Wood was in Williamson by 1804 (tax list).

Sally and William Jordan were members of the Wilson Creek Primitive Baptist
Church in Williamson Co. as early as 1804 when it was formed. Johnson and his
family were also active members of this church. The church records, on 19 Apr
1817 have an interesting entry viz. "Brother Johnson Wood rose and stated the
circumstances relevant to the dispute between Mr. John Wood and his son
Christopher in as much as the son was treating his father very ill...he, being
his brother could not bear to see the son throw his father down, and gave him
some blows. He acknowledged his sorrow for the misfortune and was acquitted."
(Note: proof of relationships is sometimes found in unexpected places!)

Apparently John returned to Lunenburg Co, VA In 1813 for at least a temporary
period. On Mar 24, 1813, in Williamson Co. TN, Conrad Richardson appointed
Josiah Johnson of said county his attorney in the sale of 85 acres on the head
waters of Meherrin Creek in Charlotte Co. VA to John Wood of Williamson
Co.,TN. The sale was made 13 May 1813 at which time John Wood was described as
being in Lunenburg Co, VA. John appeared in court in Lunenburg at this time
for in deed book 23, p. 81 it is recorded that "John Wood appeared in court to
give the names and ages of 7 slaves he brought from Tennessee into Virginia in
April 1813." He swore before a Justice of the Peace that "he did not bring
them for the purpose of sale or with any intent to evade the laws of the
Commonwealth." The slaves were Tiller a woman aged 35, Chaney female aged 18,
Frederick a boy between 10 and 11, Ritter a girl 7 yrs of age, Hannah aged 7,
Julius a boy 1 1/2 yrs, and Bartlett a boy 6 months. (Note: Tiller,
Frederick and Ritter were listed in the inventory of John's estate in
Tennessee in 1821.)

John's will was written 27 June 1821 and probated at the Oct court 1821
(Williamson Co, TN Will Book 3, p. 264-266) He named his wife Susan and his
ten children in the following order: Christopher, Elizabeth, Josiah, John,
Sarah, Nancy, Drury, Johnson, Fanny, Kesiah. It seems likely that "Johnson"
was derived from John's grandfather
Joseph Johnson. The name Johnson Wood appeared frequently in TN descendants
of Stephen Wood and Ann Johnson (daughter of Joseph Johnson.)

Nyla,

I cannot find the message where the woman asked for identification of John
Turner, who married Patsy Coleman, so I couldn't write her directly.
Hopefully, she will see this in the next compilation. John Turner, b ca
1770, Halifax, VA, d. ca 1825 Wilkes Co, GA, m Patsey Coleman. John was the
son of Meshack Turner and Rebekah Robertson. Meshack is the brother of the
Shadrack who is discussed frequently in this group of researchers. I know
there are many researchers who know much more of the Meshack line than I
do, Dennis Garrett of GA for one. I'm not sure if he's still with us or
not.

Hope this is helpful.

I have particularly appreciated the last several posts with information
from primary record sources. This is the most helpful info I believe we as
researchers can ever receive! Thanks again. Hope you're enjoying your
beautiful weather in San Diego. We are nearly 60 today in PA, after nearly
a foot of snow less than a week ago in VA! Go figure.

Hope this is the year you make your best discoveries!

Kathe: I'm so glad you shared that info with the entire group. It's
contributions like yours that help keep our group going. It's been raining in

I need a little help from the Georgia TURNERs here....

In Comp 277, Brad listed the children of James TURNER (Meshack3, John2,
Richard1) and his wife Sarah COLEMAN as
  i. Sarah W. TURNER m. Francis BILLINGSLEA
  ii. James TURNER
  iii. John TURNER
  iv. Daniel Calhoun TURNER
  v. Meshack TURNER
  vi. Martha Coleman TURNER
  vii. Maunel TURNER

My problem is with child number i. Sarah W. TURNER and whom she is married. I
have a Francis B. Billingslea married to a Sarah TURNER in Wilkes Co., GA but
the information I have lists her as the daughter of John H. TURNER. By naming
tradition, etc. of the Billingslea children, I would expect my info to be
correct assuming the first male child named after the father's father and the
second male child named after the mother's father... But it is possible there
was more than one Billingslea/Turner marriage in the same time frame with
similar names. Or it is possible I have other problems. Does anyone have
additional information or ideas on this? .....David
