7 Dec 1996

Hello to Everyone,

This compilation outlines my relationship to my newly found 5th cousin,
Evelyn. What a blessing to find another cousin.

Still wondering if anyone has an idea why the given name CREED shows
up so often as a first name in these families?

                    Nyla CREED DePauk

Hi Nyla and Kevin and whoever is in school at 41..a note of
encouragement, I am one of those Northern Turner's stuck on
Elisha Turner, 5th gf (1700's era Rev. War unable to locate d/o/b
and location (elusive Elisha) in VT) I went back to school at 45
BS, MS and achieved my doctorate in 1992 from Vanderbilt U. in
Educational Leadership. It is wonderful to go back to school
with the Kiddo's. What competition. Keep up the good work. June

Kevin is in the one in school.

Don't give up on us. One of these days we're going to hear from
another Northern Turner. Do you have names of any of Elisha Turner's
siblings, children, etc. That might help us find some info on him.

                        Nyla

Nyla, have been down with a bug for a few days, just am starting
to do catchup on your great compilations. Starting with #1, and
a William Turner born in Virginia, moved to Texas. A possible
person is the William Creed Turner, son of George and Milly
(Stone) Turner. I am enclosing a typed copy of George's will.
from 'A History of the Turner Family of Franklin Co., VA', by
William A. Roskey, p-95:

I hope that someone can make a connection here, several names are
listed.

George Wilson Turner, b. 17 Oct 1776, Franklin Co., VA, d. 13
Aug 1854, Franklin Co., VA, Will, (dated 1854)

Samuel, Lucy, Sparel, Meeby and Mildred; also all my household
and kitchen plantation tools as she may think proper to keep for
her proper use and benefit; also as much of my stock of every
description and use and benefit; also my blacksmith's tools; also
enough for her family 12 months to have and enjoy the above named
property duing her natural life, and after her death to return to
my estate, and to be divided as equal as can be, according to my
bequests hereafter to be made in every respect.
My will is that my executors sell the remainder of my slaves
as soon as convenient after my death and that they be all bought
by my legatees only, also the slaves I give to my wife during her
life when exposed to sale be bought be my legatees only.
I give my executors power to sell the above named property
on such credit as they may think will most promote the interests
of my estate.
Thirdly - I will and bequeath to my beloved son Obadiah

[The wording in this next paragraph is strange, I have a
note, that William C. Turner moved to Texas, possibly before this
will. I'm not sure where this information came from. I believe,
it may have come from Martha Jane (King) Turner, wife of
Whitfield Ross Turner, thru her daughter, Amanda (Turner) Cate,
and gandaughter Lola (Cate) Fisher. My line is thru Amanda's
brother George Whitfield Turner, Sr.]
12th - I will and bequeath to my beloved son Wm. C. Turner
one Dollar. Also I will and bequeath 1/12 part of my estate both

I find this an interesting will, partly because while George
Wilson Turner, his daughter Elizabeth (Turner) King, wife of
Solomon King, and descendants of Shadrach Turner, and Jubal
Turner, and his sons Whitfield Ross Turner, are all direct
ancestors of mine, and Jeffery Turner, another son of Jubal
Turner. Jubal was Admire Turner's youngest son, and a grandson
of James Turner, who died the same year Jubal was born, 1793.

I also think this will gives an impression of what was of value
to these families. Items in the house were certainly not of
great value. Also I would like to know what items his wife Milly
(Stone) Turner, took with her as her dower right, and if they are
listed here?

George Turner and wife Milly (Stone) Turner's children:

Nyla,

I've already said how much I like these compilations. We have to
be able to browse thru. If we only know a name, it just isn't
going to register with anyone. I have a few thousand names in
my data base, how would I be able to tell if there is a
relationship if I am told only a few names. Oh well.

Now to get to a new confusion for me. I note your Shadrack
Turner descent as:
    Shadrack Turner, 1720-1783/4, m. Ann Hill, 1724-aft 1784.
        William Turner, 1753-1845, m. Jane Hunter, 1758-1851
            John Turner, 1779-1874, m. Nancy Burnett, 1787-1871
John Burnett Turner, Sr. 1715-1897, m. Naomi
               Angeline Exoney Via, 1821-1898.

I know William and Jane (Hunter) had a son Elkanah B. Turner, b.
14 Aug 1801, Henry Co., VA, m. ca 1825, Franklin Co., VA, M. A.
Hurd; m2. 27 Oct 1840, Elizabeth C. Wingfield. Also, that
Elkanah B. Turner, and his brother John Turner were Primitive
Baptist Preachers, which is probably why, John has a son Elkanah
B. Turner. I had always assumed (don't ever assume) that the
second Elkanah B. was a son of Elkanah B. Turner Sr. But
when I checked my group sheets I find only two children by his
first wife M. A. Hurd. [Leftwich/Turner Families, by Hopkins],
and none listed with his second wife.

    Elkanah B. Turner, Rev., 1801-(?), m. ca 1825, M. A. Hurd;
their children were:
Zachary Taylor Turner, b. ca 1826, Franklin Co., VA
     James Turner, abt 1830,

My line is from John's brother George Wilson Turner, m. Milley
Stone (Milley Stone, daughter of Stephen Stone, who married
Basheba Hurt, who was a dau. of Moses Hurt and Ruth Turner, Ruth
was a dau of James Turner).

Also found from the same source, page 199, a listing of names
that fought in the Revolutionary War. Two Elkanah's are among
the listings. Do you know where this name came from?

The following are the Christian names of the Turners who were
soldiers in the Revolutionary War, according to the report made
by the Library Board of the Sate of Virginia in 1912, to the
General Assembly of the State, to-wit:  Allis; Daniel; Daniel;
David; Elkanah; Elkanah; Ellis; Francis; George; George; Henry;
Isham; James; Jessee; Jo.; John; John; Joseph Madox; Meredith.

Who were these two Elkanah Turner's, that were in the Turner
family during the revolutionary war?

Could Shadrack Turner have had a son Elkanah? Could a brother of
his have had a son Elkanah?

I do have a copy of William's will, in which he names his
youngest son Elkanah B. Turner, and not only gives him one
thirteenth part of his estate, but appoints his beloved sons
George Turner, and Elkanah B. Turner, as his executors.
