Looking for information on the Ingrams of Pittsylvania County, VA. I only go
back to L. Wade Ingram who lived about 1840-1900. He had a son, George S.
Ingram (1864-1940), who was my grandfather. Paula Ward suggested that I seek
your help. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Hugh

BIOGRAPHY: Sparrel Tyler TURNER, merchant, farmer, stockman and
legislator, was born 19 Sep 1846, on a farm in Floyd County, VA.
His father, Charles H. Turner, farmer, was an honest and
industrious man. His Mother, Violet A. Turner, was a strong
influence for good in his life. His ancestry is probably Irish,
but the early family records were lost. His home has always been
in the county in which he was born. As a boy he was healthy,
strong, and active, and was very fond of hunting and fishing.
But his play time closed early, as his father died when he was
only 10 years old, and the burden of caring for his mother and 7
sisters fell largely upon him. As a consequence he had very
little schooling though he was ambitious to obtain an
education. But he had grit and a desire to make money and be
popular, and these qualities, when combined with industry,
frugality and shrewdness, as was the case with Sparrel TURNER,
will go far toward securing success even where the knowledge of
books is limited. His working chart was and still remains "Be
honest, truthful and industrious; use ingenuity and be frugal;
set your mark high and strive to make it."
In 1864, before he was 18 years old, he enlisted as a
private in the Confederate army. He served, with fidelity,
under Bob Preston until the end of the war. When he left the
army he returned to farming. As his means would permit he also
engaged in stock raising, and by hard work, rigid economy, and
careful management, he slowly but surely bettered his financial
condition. Since 1883, he also conducted successfully a general
merchandising business in Smart, Floyd County, and has built up
an extensive trade and secured a business reputation that reaches
beyond county lines.
He was active in politics as a Republican, and
was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1893, and twice
re-elected, serving until 1898. S. T. Turner represented the
district composed of Franklin and Floyd Counties for 3 terms:
1893-94, 1895-96, and 1897-98.
The Hon. S. T. TURNER served one term in the Virginia
State Senate, representing the same district, from 13 Jan
1904 to 8 Jan 1908.
He was never defeated in an election, and he told his
family that if they ever voted other than Republican he would
disown them.
His party being in the minority during his entire service
prevented his name being associated with any successful
legislation; but among his colleagues he earned the reputation of
being a faithful and conscientious legislator, always ready to do
his whole duty at the cost of any personal inconvenience or
sacrifice. Among his constituents, most of whom have known him
all his life, he is remarkably popular. He was never defeated in
a political contest, and never failed in any business
undertaking. His success was fully deserved.
      His address was Smart, Floyd County, VA.  [Men of Mark;

evrybody was looking at me. I have seen a heap of trouble and
know I won't last long, and I would say, "Oh Lord have mercy
one me, what shall I do?" I am willing to die at any time and
think if I could just take my eight children in my arms and go
with them, that I would be the happiest person on Earth. I want
to try to meet my Pa, brothers and sisters and baby where was
taken away from me right out of my arms. I dreamed the sweetest
dream, I dreamed of being by a hay stack, and Jesus came sailing
in the air, making the sweetest noise and Jesus went around me
several times, and when he left I did too, and we both went off
sailing in the air. I dreamed another dream, that me and my
Mother and sister Lina was out on a porch dressed in white
awaiting for the last day to come and when I waked, we was still
there. I beg forgiveness for all the wrong that I have done.
