I've been a member of this list almost since the beginning, as I have TUR=
NERs
in my tree, but I recently came across a BURNETTE connection I would like=
 to
explore.

I bought a house in San Diego County, California late last year, and have=
 been
doing some research on the builder and architect. I recently discovered t=
hat
the builder's name was Benjamin F. BURNETTE, and that he was born in Miss=
ouri
in 1860 or so. He lived for 20 years in Ashville, NC, in the vehicle and
implement business. He came to San Diego in 1908, and worked in real esta=
te and
as a high school teacher. He died in 1934.

His wife was named Lutie B. (Nancy Lucretia), and her maiden name may hav=
e been
ELLSWORTH. She died in 1943 at the age of 81.

Do any of you have information about this BURNETTE family?

Thanks,

Jonathan M. Parker

I am a descendant of John McAlexander, who married Agnes Burnett 25
March 1780 in Amherst Co., VA., with the consent of her parents, John
and Elizabeth Burnett. Later John McAlexander appears in a 27 Oct.
1788 deed with his wife, Nancy. Were Nancy and Agnes the same person?
Or was Nancy a second wife?

If anybody has any information about this branch of the Burnett family,
I'd be happy to exchange information with them.

John McAlexander's wife was AGNES Burnett shown on their marriage bond
1780 in Amherst Co, Va. A copy of this bond is in Burnetts and Their
Connections, Vol. 2, p.57. "Nancy" Burnett was shown on the marriage
return. The diminutive "Nancy" was generally given to women with the
given name of AGNES or ANNE or HANNAH. I have found in most cases, any
with the above names, are interchanged. One time it will be Hannah,
then Anne, then Nancy, all for the same girl. I believe this naming
pattern was caused because most named their children after another
relative or relatives and then later as they grew, the duplication of
names became confusing - thus nick-naming began and later a middle name
was commonly used to distinguish one John from the other.

Hi everyone! I have just started to look for my family history. I have done
pretty well on the Rakes side but the Smart, Thomas and Cox are still hard for
me. All of these families were from Patrick County, VA.

My father is Gary Smart. His father was Raymond Bruce Smart. Raymond's
father was Nathaniel Smart and his mother was Gladys Cruise Smart. That is as
far as I have on that part. I know that is not much to work with!

I also have Smarts on my mother's side. My grandmother was Vernice Thomas
Rakes. Her parents were Posey A Thomas and Rosa Lillie Smart Thomas
(1891-1965) . Rosa's father was Andrew Smart (1855-1943) and her mother was
Alice Turner (1864-1960). Andrew' was the son of William C. Smart and Malinda
Boyd

Posey Thomas' (1888-1934) father was John Thomas and his mother's name was
Angeline. He had 5 brothers and two sisters. That is all I know about the
Thomas'. I do know Posey shot and killed a Cox man in the 1930's. He also
had TB.

Anyone who has any information about any of these branches, please let me
know!!

Thanks!
