The Sinnott and Sapakie families join the Victors
for Michigan campaign

Sinnott and wife MaryScholarships are critical to many of our students’ success, allowing them to focus on their academics and other enrichment activities. The late Professor Maurice J. Sinnott's family (Sinnott is with his wife Mary in the photo) and Sid and Linda Sapakie have recently created endowments that will help ChE students reach their goals as students and be prepared as they enter the profession. Bringing chemical engineering to life

342 Students Demostrating Projects.Outreach part of chemical engineering curriculum
High school students from Ypsilanti and Detroit schools traveled to North Campus last fall to see our ChE undergraduates demonstrate principles such as heat transfer and diffusion with drowned gummy bears, imploding pop cans, singed dollar bills and heat-resistant balloon animals.

2013 Michigan Engineering Alumni Awards

Two alumni honored for their achievements
Rosemarie Wesson (MSE ’85, PhD ’88) received the ChE Alumni Merit Award and Shawn Hunter (BSE ’00, MSE ’03, PhD ’05) received the Recent Graduate Award. They were honored at the annual College of Engineering dinner during homecoming in October.

Lola Eniola-Adefeso photo.Lola Eniola-Adefeso has been named an inaugural Miller Faculty Scholar. This award is for faculty whose research is in the medical/biomedical field. The award is made possible through a donation from Michigan alumnus Larry Miller.

Nick Kotov photo.Nick Kotov has been named a Fellow of the Material Research Society (MRS). He will be honored at the MRS Spring Meeting in April.

 

 

M-Cubed after the first year

Program gives seed grants to 222 interdisciplinary trios
Since 2012, the MCubed program has given $60,000 seed grants to interdisciplinary trios of qualifying researchers. To receive funding, three researchers from at least two different disciplines simply had to agree to work together on a project. The department was well represented with 20 of our faculty receiving grants for projects.

Alumnus Gives Endowed Department Chair Gift

Lembke keeps promises to Michigan

ChE alumnus Anthony C. Lembke (BSE '80) has made a gift to the College of Engineering to endow the Anthony C. Lembke Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering. The endowment will generate discretionary funds for the department chair, to support the work of the department.

Changes for the New Year

Savage is interim chair
Phil Savage will serve as interim chair of the department from January 1, 2014 - July 31, 2014 while Mark Burns is on a sabbatical in Northern California.

Summer move
This summer, eight faculty members will move their offices and labs to the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC) before the University begins renovations in the G.G. Brown Labs. They will join six ChE faculty who have already moved to the former Pfizer facilities.

Honored by China's Academy
Cunhao Zhang (MS '51) was named a member of the China Academy of Science in laser chemistry. He is one of two Chinese scientists who received the top science and technology award in China in 2013.

Alumni Deaths

John C. Chen, (PhD '61) emeritus professor at Lehigh University and former AIChE President, passed away on December 31, 2013.

Eric J. Willing (BSE '00) passed away on May 27, 2013. Eric was married to fellow ChE alumnus, Katie Konopka (BSE '00).
