Welcome to the World of Capitalism, or as the Dutch say: “kapitalisme”!
While celebrating the successful launch of his new financial institution “Phake Banks International” in the Netherlands, Mr. Moneybags noticed an interesting new market developing: organic glow in the dark refrigerators. Never being powerful or wealthy enough, Mr. Moneybags decided that instead of trying to start another organic glow in the dark refrigerator company to compete with the others, it would be much more prudent to monopolize the synthesis of (E)-methyl 2-((2S,3S,6S)-3-acetoxy-6-((2R,3R)-3-((benzyloxy)methoxy)-2-((4-methoxybenzyl)oxy)butyl)-2-((E)-5-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)-2-methylpent-3-en-2-yl)-2-methoxydihydro-2H-pyran-4(3H)-ylidene) acetate (20), a key structure in the chemical process of making the fridges both organic and glow in the dark. Figuring out how to synthesize this organic compound is no easy task, so Mr Moneybags employed the bright young minds of Leon Averbukh, Garrett Roe, and Ian Nilsen. Together the four were able to figure out how to take ketone 19 and successfully convert it to the desired product 20. Mr. Moneybags is going to double his net worth!
