Quaternary ammonium salt which is used in laboratories mainly to remove silyl ether protecting groups. In the desilylation step, TBAF is added to bond with the silicon of the silyl ether and leave behind a negatively charged oxygen. This reaction occurs since the bond strength of flourine-silicon is extremely strong, and much preferred to that of oxygen-silicon of the silyl ether.
