Anthony
Collings, author of Words of Fire, worked for more than thirty years
as a foreign and national correspondent. He reported for the Wall Street
Journal in New York and for the Associated Press in Moscow, London and
Bonn. Collings was Newsweek bureau chief in Bonn and London, and CNN
bureau chief and correspondent in Rome, before coming to Washington as a CNN
national affairs correspondent. He shared a National Headliner Award for his
coverage of the Iran-Contra affair, and shared an Emmy for his coverage of
the Oklahoma City bombing. In addition to being detained by police in Damascus,
Athens and Rome while covering the news, he was held at gunpoint, with a CNN
crew in Lebanon in May 1981, by Syrian and Palestinian forces while covering
a missile crisis. In 1997 he came to the University of Michigan as Visiting
Marsh Professor of Journalism in the Department of Communication Studies,
and is now a Lecturer
in Communication Studies in the department.
