The white rocks in the foreground are part of the Kaibab limestone, deposited from the Kaibab Sea some 250 million years ago. This formation may be seen on the north rim, as indicated. These limestone layers are identified as belonging to geologically similar materials, even though they are many miles apart. They are thus said to belong to the same formation. Several formations, with some common properties, may be referred to as a group, as in the case of the Supai group.
Although the Kaibab limestone is some 350 feet thick, it is just seen in the distance. The larger white layer below the Kaibab belongs to the Coconino Sandstone. The Supai Group and Redwall limestone are also marked.
Sorry if the color looks wierd on your browser. The color wasn't bad on my color image editor, but the display algorithms must be different!!
