Prayer at UWorship 2002

Christians United 5 Core Values:

1) Teamwork

  • We need to work together in the Kingdom - no one group can reach this campus alone.
  • We need to realize that the work of seeing U of M transformed is bigger than our ministry.
  • A team structure helps teamwork to happen (we have a directional team).
  • A team brings results bigger than one person or ministry could bring alone.
  • Team Intercession - we are God's powerhouse to establish his kingdom on earth.
  • It takes work to have teamwork - and the main work is communication.
  • We need to move beyond just gathering and actually assemble.

2) Relationships

  • Relationships are the way to build the trust we need.
  • A group like CU will never last beyond just the events without building lasting relationships with one another.
  • Scriptures: Jn13:35, Rom 13:8

3) United Prophetic Voice

  • Christians on campus need to speak together to be heard at all.
  • Example: The Muslim Student Association unites 2000+ student Muslims. When anyone (the Daily, etc) wants to get the Muslim opinion on just about anything, they go to this student group because they are the united Muslim student force on campus.
  • A united voice also foreshadows the kingdom to come, where our unity will finally be complete.
  • Scriptures: Jn 17:11,22-23, Ecc 4:7-12, Eph 4:16, 1 Cor 12:12-27

4) Supportive Community

  • Student leaders and Staff of university Christian organizations understand each other well because we're doing the same work.
  • This allows us to support, encourage and pray for one another.
  • Scriptures: Acts 2:42-47, Acts 4:32-33, Rom 12:4-6, Mt 6:10,33

5) Transformation

  • John 12:32 "and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself."
  • Lifting up the name of Jesus -  seeing many come to the Lord - even beyond this campus.
  • Scriptures: Mt 28:18-20, 1Tim 2:3-4

Vision : What is Christians United?

Christians United is a catalyst uniting Christian groups to transform the university by lifting up the name of Jesus.

This is our purpose statement. It is CU's reason for being and it is what we pursue. It should last more than 100 years, beyond one person's time here at the U, and should not change.

a catalyst...
-a substance that speeds up chemical reactions without being effected itself
-CU is not a super-group that takes over groups, but will hopefully be a spark that enables us to do things that our own ministries couldn't do alone.

uniting...
-we use the word "uniting" which is an active word that points toward "to transform"
-the word "uniting" even says that CU could help to bring more unity internally within groups through empowering them to go out beyond themselves to transform the campus.

transform the university
-2Co 3:18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
-in our case, this transformation is deliberately pointed toward the university
-but, it's university with a small "u" because it's not just about U of M; these things can go out to Eastern, to churches county-wide, and even beyond.

lifting up the name of Jesus
-to exalt, honor, glorify, lift up - we do all things for the glory of God.
-coming under the common banner of Christ has always been central to unity movements on campus.

We have also formulated a Statement of Faith, in which we affirm:

  • The only true God (Deut. 6:4; Is. 43:10-11), the almighty Creator of all things (Gen. 1; Ex. 20:11; Is. 40:12, 26), existing eternally in three persons -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:18-19; Luke 3:22).
  • Jesus Christ, fully human (Luke 2:1-14; Phil. 2:6-8; 1 Tim. 2:5-6) and fully divine, who lived as a perfect example (Heb. 7:26; 1 Pet. 2:21-24), who assumed the judgment due sinners by dying in our place (Rom. 5:8; 1 Pet. 3:18), and who was bodily raised from the dead (Matt. 28:6; Luke 24:39; 1Cor.15:3-4) and ascended as Savior and Lord (Acts 1:9, 11; Phil. 2:9-11). Salvation is found only through faith in Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:8-10; John 14:6).
  • The unique divine inspiration and entire trustworthiness and authority of the Bible (2 Tim. 3:14-17).
