Motion in Support of "Affirmative Action 102" and the October 19th Day of ActionWhereas, the two affirmative action cases are of sweeping importance to the University of Michigan and to higher education across the country. These cases are very likely bound for the US Supreme Court and will set legal precedent for the nation.
Whereas, the Michigan Student Assembly has a clear and strong position in support of affirmative action and has supported the University against these lawsuits since they were first filed in federal court.
Whereas, these cases are important enough that the defendants have received active support from many dozens of national organizations ranging in type from college and university administration associations, civil rights groups, multinational corporations and trade unions.
Whereas, with the two affirmative action lawsuits scheduled for trial this school year it is important that MSA (following in the tradition of "Affirmative Action 10111) continues to play a role in educating students about the nature of the legal and social policy issues at hand, and that MSA continues to play a role in involving students through support for events like the day of action.
Therefore be it resolved, the Michigan Student Assembly supports the week of educational events scheduled for the week of October 16th, "Affirmative Action 102".
Therefore be it resolved, MSA supports the Day of Action in Defense of Integration and Affirmative Action called for Thursday, October 19th. MSA will help spread the word about this day of action. MSA will send a speaker(s) to the rally.
Therefore be it resolved, MSA assigns the Peace & Justice Commission to work on this project, working with the administration, faculty, student groups and other commissions of MSA.
