November 16, 1999:

Resolution to Oppose Discriminatory
Practices against Black Students

Whereas, Black student events in the Michigan Union have experienced discriminatory practices including:

1. Disproportionately more DPS officers are assigned to black student events at the Michigan Union.

2. DPS officers force black students to exit through either the back or side door after social events; students are not allowed to leave out of the front door. Students who stand on the sidewalk after an event are harassed by DPS, threatened with loitering tickets, and treated like criminals.

3. DPS officers hawkishly monitor ticket sales for black events, including, forcing ticket sales to stop before maximum tickets are sold to control the number of people in the event.

4. Black students are required to show ID when entering the Union and again at the ticket window.

5. There is a large DPS presence inside black events.

6. DPS officers shut down black events early.

Whereas, Discrimination and racism are unacceptable in any form at the University of Michigan;

Resolved, The Michigan Student Assembly goes on record opposing discrimination against black social events, and calls for an end to any and all such policies.

Resolved, MSA supports the efforts of black students to end any discriminatory policies and to achieve fair and equal treatment.
