- Ball Calls for Improvements to Teacher Training - Not Arguments - in New Editorial
On February 20, Deborah Ball published an editorial in The Chronicle of Higher Education responding to the controversy around the forthcoming National Council on Teacher Quality and U.S. News & World Report rating of U.S. teacher education programs. In the article - "Let's Radically Improve Teacher Training (and Stop Fighting About It)" - Ball argues that instead of arguing about how to evaluate programs, we should take advantage of the current attention on teacher quality to make this a moment to "radically improve the professional training of teachers." She goes on to describe a set of steps that can be taken to begin producing skillful, effective teachers, including the identification of specific skills needed by teachers, the development of assessments that can measure whether teachers hold the identified skills, and creating supports for continuous improvement and practice assessment.
