| Avon played his high school hockey for Central High School in Detroit, Michigan. At U of M, Avon played center from 1931-1934 under Coach Eddie Lowrey. His most memorable game was against Kitchener which Michigan won 2-1. He scored one goal and had one assist in that game. His most important goal was a winning goal against Minnesota which evened the season's series. Avon was elected captain of Michigan's baseball team in 1933. | |
| He was selected by College Humor magazine to the 1933-34 Baseball All American team. Avon graduated from the College of Literature, Science, and Arts in 1934. | |
