| Dr. Barss was born in India and raised in Nova Scotia. He played college hockey at McGill and Acadia Universities and professional hockey for the Montreal Wanderers. In 1919, Dr. Barss came to Ann Arbor to study medicine, receiving his degree in 1924. Dr. Barss became the principal organizer of post war hockey at the University of Michigan. In 1922, his third year of medical school, he became Michigan's first hockey coach as a varsity sport. In five years of coaching, his teams won 26 games, lost 21 and tied 4. | |
| In 1924-25, his team won Michigan's first conference hockey championship and his 1926-27 team tied with Minnesota for first place. | |
