John hails from Toronto and played on the DeLaSalle junior hockey team for two years before coming to Michigan. He was captain both years and his team won the Ontario Championship his last year there. Playing goal under coach Vic Heyliger in the 1945-46 and 1949-50 seasons, John played in the 1949-50 NCAA playoffs in Colorado. He was selected to the Second Western College All Star team in 1945-46. In 1956, John was named coach at Michigan Technological University. His teams always finished near the top of the league. Since 1960, John's teams were in the NCAA playoff many times, winning the championship in 1962 and 1965.
   
He was also a professor in the Physical Education department at Michigan Tech. In 1950, while living in Ann Arbor, John, along with Dr. Tom Gilson, Vic Heyliger, and Karl Litzenberg, started the Ann Arbor Amateur Hockey League, serving as League Director until leaving to coach at Michigan Tech. He was very instrumental in making the youth hockey program successful in its early days. John's career record at Michigan; 1945-46 his 21 game win/loss was 14-6-1. Michigan was Western College champions that season. John had one assist that year against the Bradford Seniors. In 1949-50, his 15 game win/loss was 13-2, leading Michigan to the Western College championship. John's career goals against average was a remarkable 2.60.
