George played high school hockey for Calumet High School before attending Michigan. He played left wing from 1924-1927 under Coach Joseph Barss. Called Nick by his teammates, his most important goal was a winning goal against Minnesota in overtime. Since most games ended with very low scores, the 1924-25 team scored 12 goals and allowed only 6 goals.
Wearing the maize and blue uniform was very inspiring for George and in his sophomore season (1924-25), Michigan won its first Big Ten Hockey Championship. George graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1928 and coached many amateur teams in the Detroit area.
