Alex MacLellan hails from Montreal, Quebec and played hockey for Westhill High School and the Montreal Junior Canadians before coming to the University of Michigan in the fall of 1950. He played defense from 1950-51 through 1952-53 under coach Vic Heyliger.
 
Alex scored 11 goals and 38 assists in 77 career games. During his collegiate days at the University of Michigan, Michigan's win/loss record was 61-15-1. Nicknamed Herky, he played in every game for three years. He also played in three NCAA championships, with Michigan winning all of them; 1951, 1952, and 1953. Alex was selected as an All-American in 1953. He was also selected to the First Team of the 1953 NCAA championships. He was also voted Most Valuable Player by his team mates in 1953. Alex graduated from the University of Michigan's School of Business Administration.
