Bill is from Edina, MN and played junior and high school hockey in his hometown from 1960-1964. He was selected an All-State defenseman in 1964. Entering the University of Michigan in the fall of 1964, Bill played defense for three seasons, 1965-66 through 1967-68 for coach Al Renfrew. Quoting his coach, "Bill was one of my finest captains in my 16 years of coaching at Michigan." During his senior year, Bill was elected captain and led the Wolverines to a 18-9 record.
 
One of Bill's most memorable experience was playing in front of his hometown fans in Williams Arena in Minneapolis and beating the Gophers. The highlight of his scoring career was a goal against Tony Esposito of Michigan Tech in the Detroit holiday tournament in 1966. Bill graduated from the School of Business Administration in 1968.
