A native of Windsor, Ontario, Schiller was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings. However, he elected to pursue his educational goals and played Junior A for the St. Michael's College School “Majors” in Toronto prior to coming to Michigan.

Schiller played for Coach Vic Heyliger who claimed,” Bob has a lot of natural ability and has one of the best shots in the country.” Bob is also remembered for his famous patented “hip check”and his rugged, steady style of defensive play.

At U of M, he played left defense on the 1955 & 1956 NCAA Championship teams. Additionally, Schiller was named All American in the 1955 and 1956 seasons. In the 1957 season, Bob was part of the team that battled its way through the season and playoff only to lose in the NCAA Championship Game.

Schiller graduated from the School of Engineering in Aeronautical and Aerospace engineering and went on to have a successful career in the aerospace industry.

In 1958 and 1959, he played for the Toledo Mercury's of the International League, while studying for his MBA degree.
