Bernie came to Michigan from Ville Saint-Laurent, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and played right wing for Coach Al Renfrew from 1968-1969 to 1971-1972. He scored 79 goals and 63 assists for a career total of 142 points. Nicknamed "The Boomer", Bernie's most memorable game came against archrival Michigan State in a game where he scored the tying goal late in the third period to force overtime and Michigan won the game 8 to 7. Bernie had 3 goals and 4 assists in the game, figuring in 7 of the team's 8 goals.
 
Bernie served as Assistant Captain in his junior and senior years. He was named the Dekers "Most Colorful Rookie" in 1970 and the team's "Most Valuable Player" in 1972. He was also selected to the All-WCHA Team in 1972. Following graduation from the School of Business Administration, Bernie played minor league hockey in St. Louis, Fort Worth and San Diego. He also spent 10 years in Switzerland, both as a player and a coach.
