Gib played for the Ottawa Shamrocks Jr O.H.A. team from 1930-33. His team was in the Memorial Cup playoffs all three years. He enrolled at U of M in the fall of 1935 and played left wing for coach Eddie Lowrey. During the 1935-36 season he scored 14 goals in 8 games. His second season he scored 25 goals and had 21 assists. During the 1937-38 season he scored 12 goals and had 10 assists in 9 games.
 
His most memorable experiences were playing with his brother "Spike", a goalie and fellow inductee in the Dekers Hall of Fame, and playing with Vic Heyliger and John Febello.
 

Gib's most memorable game was when he scored 10 goals and one assist against St. Thomas, Ontario on February 18, 1936. The final score of that game was Michigan 12, St. Thomas 6, with Vic Heyliger adding 8 assists. His most important goals were against Minnesota in 1937 when Michigan tied Minnesota for the Big Ten Championship and scoring in the second overtime to beat Sarnia 2-1. Gib won several honors while at U of M. They include: hockey numerals his fresham year; "M" letters in 1936, 1937, and 1938; "Gold Puck" in 1937 for a tie with Minnesota in the Big Ten Championship; "Copper Hockey Plaque" 1937 State Championship; 1937 selection to the Midwest College All-Star Team.

Gib graduated from the College of Literature, Science and Arts in 1938 with a B.S. degree.
