Michael Marttila is from Detroit and played hockey for the Detroit Olympics in 1961 and for the Detroit Junior Red Wings in 1962 and 1963 before enrolling at the University of Michigan. Mike played left wing for coach Al Renfrew from 1964-65 to 1966-67. To quote his coach: "He was a quiet leader who led by example. He had one of the greatest shots of all the players I coached. Has always supported the program since graduation."
 
He has several memorable experiences while playing for the Wolverines, but he mostly enjoyed the travel with the team, especially to Boston and Colorado. The first-class accommodations accorded the Michigan hockey program will always be remembered. For two seasons, Mike played on the "Kid Line", an all Detroit line with his brother Lea and Bruce Koviak. Dean Lucier and Harold Herman, all five played together for the Detroit Junior Red Wings. In the RPI tournament in 1966, the "Kid Line" scored 6 goals in a 9-1 victory over Colgate.
 
Mike also scored the winning goal in wins over Michigan Tech, North Dakota, and Colorado College. His career total stands at 26 goals and 32 assists for 60 total career points. In his senior year, Mike was elected captain and led Michigan to a 19-7-2 record. He was the first Michigan native since 1944 to be elected captain for the Michigan hockey team. Graduated from the School of Education, Mike and his brother started a family business in the Detroit area. Mike has been active in old-timers hockey and senior hockey. Mike lists his life-long friends of the Michigan hockey program as a mainstay to his success and happiness.
