The University of Michigan Club of Downriver
Wolverine Family Day at the Detroit Zoo
August 14, 2005
About 15 alumni and friends picnicked at the zoo near the wolverine den. What a great sight! The two wolverine kits were out with their mother romping around their territory, playing in the water, and battling each other. Just like watching a wolverine football practice. We raised over $500 to adopt a wolverine. If we raise another $500 we can adopt another one. Send checks made out to The Detroit Zoo to Bill Richardson, 14258 Greentrees, Riverview, MI 48193. Any amount will help.
In reviewing Michigan football history at the umich.edu web site we discovered some interesting facts. Fielding Yost obtained 10 wolverines from Alaska and donated them to the Detroit Zoo in 1927. Two of them were brought to the stadium on football Saturdays for a while until they grew too ferocious. One of them, Buff, was displayed in a cage on campus near the Natural History Museum.
