Who Are You?

During the introduction of the limited sci fi tv series Crusade (through TNT), Galen asks the question "Who are you?" I once heard or read that most people answer this question with their name, but a name isn't who you are. A name describes a group of outward actions that others perceive and/or a name sets up a standard of expectations from the connotation others place on the words. You may tend to conform to your namesake, but you are an individual and much more than a name can describe you. So "Who are YOU??" What is it that makes you YOU, and separates you from another person with the same name?

What Do You Want?

Galen questions the motives of Captain Gideon in the tv series Crusade. He asks "What do you want?" The answer to this question is often trickier than it first appears.

The question should be more appropriately asked "What do you THINK you want?" What you want is often left unsaid except in your subconscious, whereas what you think you want but find out later you really didn't want is what is often spoken. Stanley Kubrick's movie "Eyes Wide Shut" emphasizes the fact that fantasies are no more than that, and a fantasy made real turns things sour.

So if what you think you want is no more than an illusion, what is it that you actually want? Is it really based on the psychology pyriamid, with food and shelter on the bottom and love on the top? Or is it more that people want GOALS--something that they can reach for, whether it comes true or not? A goal that they can strive for, something to make their life worth living for. What do YOU want?

Where Are You Going?

Galen in the tv series Crusade asks Captain Gideon where he is going. While most people think of this question in a physical sense of places, I tend to also think of this in terms of a mental state. Usually changing physical locations means changing mental viewpoints also, so they often go hand and hand and are often not separated out. However, you can stay in the same location and still change mentally or, conversely, change locations and not change viewpoints, and so I feel the distinction is necessary.

Where are you going mentally? Are you continuing to educate your mind and expanding your knowledge outward or are you stagnating with the same old ideas? Stagnation is dangerous because the world is continually changing and new viewpoints are necessary in order for one to adapt for survival in the new order of things. Minds that stagnate are also often the minds that are more prejudiced since new ideas often conflict with old set patterns. It is not that old ideas are bad, but rather that the world has changed so that the old ideas are no longer as useful as new ideas--a change in paradigms needs to occur. Where are YOU going?

Who Do You Serve And Who Do you Trust?

Galen on the tv show Crusade suspiciously asks Captain Gideon who he serves. Dr. Alexander at the University of Michigan explains in a class called "Evolution and Human Behavior" that who we serve is based upon the unconscious force of the evolutionary drive to continue our set of genes to the next generation. You may see yourself risking your life on a matter of principles, but when it comes down to it, you are really making a name for yourself that will guarantee a good marriage for not only yourself but for the generations yet to come in your family. So are you really serving anyone but yourself and your genes no matter what the cause may be?

Galen also asks Captain Gideon who he trusts. This is related to the above question "who do you serve" because you have to remember that everyone else out there is catering to the preservation of their genes. You can only trust a person in as far as it serves their purpose to be trusted. The sci fi tv show Andromeda accentuates this in a genetically enhanced human race, the Nietzscheans; I find Tyr Anasazi to be one of the most interesting characters for this reason. On the other hand, one should not purposely manipulate the meaning of survival of the fittest to meet his/her own ends either.

Many people would rather place their trust in God(s) since people are unreliable. Which brings us to a whole new topic of Does God Exist and What Is God Like? Or is this just another goal/fantasy that people have created to answer the questions "Who are you, what do you want, and where are you going?"

Description of the Universe

In an independent movie, Pi, a guy tries to describe/predict the world around him through one number. The movie showed how people tried to take advantage of the mathematician, whether they were hoping to make a killing on the stock market or whether they were monks in search of God, and how the guy decided that no one was quite ready for that ultimate knowledge.

So can the world be described/predicted in one number or one word? If so, what would YOU do with the knowledge of the description of the universe? Are we ready to deal with that knowledge?

Time As a Reel to Reel Film

Witchblade, the TNT tv series based off of the comic book series of the same name, proposes that time is like a reel to reel film. Not only can time go forwards and backwards, but any frames stacked on top of others below can be reached also. In this way, time is three dimensional.

This could explain the double deja-vu instances. There have been times in which I thought the event I was in was familiar, but I know it had never happened. Then a while later, I experience deja vu again when the experience really is repeated in a similar manner.
