Economic reasons were the most widely given and contested justification for slavery in the British empire during the 18th century. Not only was this the argument that proponents of the trade favored most, but it was also difficult for abolitionists to dispute. Indeed, slavery was a major component of the British economy, and on an even wider level, made possible the average Brit's daily indulgences. As a result, economic arguments formed one of the most compelling reasons for continuing the trade.
