Presently an Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Christine Evans received her B.S. degree from Oregon State University and her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. After two years of post-doctoral study with Paul W. Bohn at the University of Illinois-Urbana, she joined the faculty at Michigan in 1993. Honors and awards include the Eli Lilly Research Excellence Award and the General Electric Junior Faculty Fellowship. Professor Evans' research interests center on the development of a molecular-level understanding of separations and those interactions leading to selective speciation. Research is focused in two primary areas: Pressure studies and Interfacial design. Pressure-induced perturbations in interaction equilibria are under investigation from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. The implications of these studies are both fundamental and pragmatic, advancing basic understanding of the separation process as well as improving the practice of separation science. Interfacial studies are focused on the design and fabrication of monolayer polymers for separations and sensor applications. The robust monolayers under investigation make possible the nanoscale control of interfacial properties necessary in separation science. A new collaboration has recently begun with James Penner-Hahn (UM) focused on the design and application of capillary electrophoresis coupled with X-ray fluorescence detection (CE-XRF). This exciting new technique combines the separating power of capillary electrophoresis with the element-specific detection of X-ray fluorescence. Studies are underway to implement this technique for biological and environmental measurements including the analysis of metalloproteins.
